History

 

1862, Oct.: “WHITELEY—On Wednesday, the 15th inst., Mary Ann wife of George Whiteley, in the 30th year of her age.

            “The friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral from the residence of her husband [sic. mother], No. 3706 Baring street, Mantua Village, this day, at 2 o’clock. Funeral to proceed to Woodlands Cemetery.”

            The 1863 directory lists Catherine Allen, gentlewoman, 1630 Wallace

 

1863 Draft Registration: Samuel Sherrerd, insurance agent, 44 years old.

            The 1863 Directory lists Samuel Sherrerd insurance broker at 224 Walnut St. living at 36th and Bridge (Spring Garden) Sts.

 

1863, January 14: 3704 & 3706 were surveyed (along with 3716 & 3718) for insurance by The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire. They were owned by William P. Hamm. (Detailed descriptions are available on-line from the Contributionship archives.)  He lived at 206 N. 35th St.

1868, Feb. 26: Title transferred to William Nelson West by William P. Hamm

 

1870 Directory (Fall, 1869): Samuel H. Sherrerd, adjuster of averages at 222 Walnut St.

                         Catherine Allen, widow of John

                                    Catherine was the widow of John Allen, a builder. During the summer of 1870 they apparently moved here from 3716 Baring St. In 1860, they lived in Ward 4, West Division. In 1880, she and her daughter, Josephine, were boarders in the home of Mary Berghauser (widow of Henry), 3723 Spring Garden St. Catherine died in 1891 when she was living at 3703 Powelton Ave.

            The 1866 Directory lists him living at 2324 Lombard St. The 1870 census lists him at 3523 Hamilton St. In 1880, they lived at 3719 Hamilton St. The 1881 Directory lists him as an auctioneer working at 124 S. Front St. The 1890 Directory lists John W. and John A. Powell living at 3813 Hamilton St. In 1900, they lived at 3410 Hamilton St.

            Sherman & Delaplaine, Importers of French. German and English Hatters' Goods, No. 33 North Third Street.-E. C. Sherman and D. S. W. Delaplaine established themselves here in 1875. They are extensive importers of French, German and English hatters' goods, being identified with some of the largest foreign producers, and their trade in this country is extensive and influential. The premises occupied consist of four commodious floors. They carry a very heavy stock of fine goods, and the liberal methods and honorable dealing characteristic of the house render it a very desirable purchasing centre. Personally, the Messrs. Sherman and Delaplaine stand high in confidence and esteem of the commercial world, and the success which has marked their career is but the fitting award of their marked energy and enterprise.” (Philadelphia’s Leading Industries, p 149.)

            Julia Gyger was the widow of Jesse Gyger. In 1880, they lived in Radnor where he was a farmer. In 1910, they lived at 3715 Baring St. where Adelaide lived until at least 1950.

            Their sister, Catherine (Kate) Mullen Woodward, died in 1901. She was living with Charles (as well as her husband and possible their sisters) at 308 N. 37th St. Her husband, Winfield S. Woodward, and three children later lived at 311 N. 37th St.

 

1915, July 13: Death of Mary R. Mullen, daughter of the late Thomas M. Mullen and Mary D. Mullen. She was 63.

            Charles Thomas Mullen died in 1931. He was living in Wynnewood, Pa.

            Frank Corson Smith and Marion M. Woodward (Charles T, Mullen’s niece) were married in June, 1910. She was living with her parents around the corner at 311 N. 37th St.

            The census sheet seems to have mixed up the information on Rogers and Grace listing Grace as a teacher and Rogers as a housekeeper.

            In 1920 and 1930, they lived in an apartment at 801 S. 47th St. In 1930, Betsy (or Bessie) was working as a bank clerk. George R. and Grace were not employed. In 1920, George R. was a manager t a chair manufacturer, Grace E. was a stenographer at a bank, and Bessie was an “interest clerk” at an insurance company.
