3701-19: “two-and-one-half story Second Empire style doubles; stone facade over brick. First-floor Victorian porches; some altered-(3703, 3705-07, 3709, 3719); four registers, slate- shingled mansard (3701, 3705-07, 3709 asphalt); slightly arched dormer windowheads. All built by the same developer.”

History

1876, June: Deed to 3711, 3713, 3715, 3717, and 3719 transferred from Joseph Campion to Life Insurance Company American.

 

1876, June: Deed to 3711, 3713, 3715, 3717, and 3719 transferred from Life Insurance Company American to Louis M. Simpson.

            Louis M. Simpson was a 23-year-old law student. He was the son of William H. Simpson, the Deputy Collector of Taxes. He was apparently acting as a transfer agent.

 

1876, June: Deed to 3717 and 3719 transferred from Louis M. Simpson to Isaac Hazlehurst.

            Hazelhurst was a lawyer. In 1870, he lived in Lower Merion with three children and four servants. He listed $80,000 in real estate and $10,000 in personal property.

 

1878 Directory: Jesse W. Thatcher, physician

            The year before, he and his family lived at 3622 Hamilton St. In 1890, he bought 3500 Hamilton St. See biographies and photos at that page.

            The 1878 directory lists Watson F. Thatcher living at 3706 Baring St. He was the son of Oliver and Hannah Thatcher. The 1868 directory lists Oliver at 1625 S. 12th St.

            Brady lived next door at 3719 Hamilton St.

1893, Jan 19: “A Pretty Wedding

            “A pretty mid-winter wedding took place last night at the future home of the bridge and groom, 247 South Forty-fourth street, when Miss Florence Hood, of Forty-second and Spruce streets, was married to Thomas Love Latta, of 3717 Hamilton street. The ceremony was according to the Old Scottish ritual and performed by the Rev. Dr. John MackIntosh. The house was handsomely decorated with ferns and potted plants…. A reception followed, after which the bridge and bridegroom left for a tour of the South.” (Inquirer, Jan. 20)

            John L. Brady and Mary Skelly were married at St. Agatha’s Church, West Philadelphia on Oct. 28, 1891 by Rev. D. O. Connor, the rector.

            Victor S. Eidell and Anna Martha Jung were married in Philadelphia in 1895. In 1910, they lived at 4858 Parrish St. and in 1930 they lived at 601 N. 43rd St. Martha A. Eidell was the widow of Frederick R. Eidell. In 1880, they lived at 829 Lex St. Frederick was a hostler (groom or stable man). The 1880 directory lists him as a carpenter. Martha was age 28.

 

1925, Jun. 13: Death of Daniel Albert Everhart, 70 years old, husband of Viola Everhart of 3717 Hamilton St.

            In 1900, they lived in Honey Brook, Chester, Pa. In 1910, they lived at 3918 Powelton Ave. In 1920, they lived at 5025 Hazel Ave.

            In 1920, Ada (Everhart) Mast was already widowed and she and Elizabeth lived with them. They all lived with Charles Emma Ankrum, Viola’s daughter and son-in-law.  Ada was married to Wayne H. Mast (1878-1909).

            Valeria Eleanor Everhart married John Leroy Irwin in 1908 in Philadelphia. In 1920, they lived at 1130 S. 52nd St. He was a machinist for a storage battery co. He died July 22, 1929 when they were living at 8305 Ogontz Ave., Elkins Park. He was 45. His occupation at that time was estimator for Budd Manufacturing Co.

 

1939, Apr. 3: Death of Viola H. (Stauffer) Everhart, 78 years old; burial at Elverson Methodist Cemetery, Elverson, Chester Co., Pa.

            She was the daughter of Andrew Stauffer and Leah Sponagle.

 

1940:
