3521-23: “two-and-one-half story Second Empire-style double with stone facade; side wood Victorian porch; first-floor projecting bays, large and small bracketed cornice, slate-shingled mansard with dormers”

History

 

1866, May: Deed for 3511-3523 Hamilton St. was transferred from Evans W. Shippens to James P. Bruner.

            In the early 1860s Evans Shippen lived at 35th and Bridge [Spring Garden] St. In 1860, he was a 35-year-old coal dealer and iron founder. In 1870, he and his family were living in Vernon, Crawford Co., Pa. where he was a farmer.

            James P. Bruner was a mill owner who lived at 3509 Spring Garden St.

 

1868, March 5: Sale of property: Owners: Samuel P. Ferree, gentleman, and Annie A. (husband & wife), sold to T. D. Crispenn, bricklayer, and Catherine, (husband & wife) six contiguous lots [3511-3523 Hamilton St.] for $5,416.67.

            Samuel and Annie Ferree lived at 3514 Spring Garden St.

 

3521-3523 Hamilton St. was built by Thomas D. Crespin. He usually identified himself as a bricklayer, although he is listed as a builder in the 1881 city directory. From at least 1856 until the 1870s, he lived in various house near 39th and Powelton with his wife and seven children.  In the 1870 census he declared $25,000 in real estate and $1,400 in personal property. His younger brothers, James C. Crispen and Joseph Crispen, were also bricklayers and probably worked with him. In the late 1860s, Joseph lived at 34th and Filbert Sts. He did not claim any real estate. Thomas Crispen also built 3509-3511, 3517-3519, and 3521-3523 Hamilton St. and 3400-3402, 3404-3406 and 3408-3410 Baring St. (The name was variously spelled Crespenn or Crispenn.)

            The 1866 Directory lists him living at 2324 Lombard St. From about 1873-1877, they lived at 3706 Baring St. In 1880, they lived at 3719 Hamilton St. The 1881 Directory lists him as an auctioneer working at 124 S. Front St.  The 1890 Directory lists John W. and John A. Powell living at 3813 Hamilton St. In 1900, they lived at 3410 Hamilton St.

            Mary was the widow of Moses Hey. He was born in England about 1793. He was a farmer and mill owner in Springfield, Delaware Co. In 1860, he reported $60,000 in real estate and $29,700 in personal property. In 1870, Mary was already widowed. They lived in Ward 15 (Vine to Poplar, west of Broad St.). Mary reported $10,000 in real estate and each of the six children reported $6,000 in real estate. Caroline Lutton had a five-year old daughter, Emma.

              In 1900, Caroline Lutton and Rebecca, Charles, and John Hey were living together in Upper Darby. Caroline was widowed and the three others never married. None of them was working.

 

1891 Directory: Mary Arthur, widow of Robert

            The 1884 directory lists her at 43 N. 38th St. In 1880, they lived in Baltimore where Richard Arthur was a 63-year-old doctor. Mary reported that her parents were born in Germany.

            Lucile and Marjorie Wescott were daughters of Walter W. and Etta M. Wescott. In 1920, they were ages 17 and 11 living with their parents at 4125 Ogden St. Walter was a machinist for dairies. In 1940, Margorie was living at 2430 Walnut St. She was single and working as a clerk for an insurance company. In the 1930, Lucile is listed as Lucile W. Sholder, wife of Joseph W. Shoulder. They had been married about two years. They were apparently divorced and he remarried.
