3703 Powelton Street

 

3701-3703: “Second Empire-style; two-and-one-half story, double; stone facade over brick construction. First-floor full-height windows partially enclosed; porch removed. Applied decorative wood cornice below slate-shingled mansard which has four wood gabled dormers. This double was built with its neighbor 3705-07.”

1865, Dec. 6: Title for Block of land starting at the NW corner of Powelton and N. 37th, proceeding north to 310 N. 37th, then west to Lancaster Ave. transferred to John H. McIlvain by Lydia E. Baring

            The property became part of the McIlvain lumber business.

 

1867, Dec. 4: Title for Block of land starting at the NW corner of Powelton and N. 37th, proceeding north to 310 N. 37th, then west to Lancaster Ave. transferred to Charles J. McIlvain by John H. McIlvain

            George Washington Mixter and Mary Ella Chaffee were married Dec. 1, 1876 in Philadelphia.  The 1878 directory lists him as selling notions at 255 Market St. and living at 2221 Green St.  Living next to him at 2219 Green St. was Charles W. Mixter.  George was listed at 2219 Green in 1879.

 

1881 Directory: George W. Mixter, hosiery at 253 Market St.

            The 1883 directory lists him at 3621 Hamilton St.

 

1887-‘91 Directories: Charles A. Jenkins list him as a partner in Wood, Brown & Co., dry goods dealers, at 822-826 Market St.

            In 1870, they lived at 3714 Baring St. and in 1880, they lived at 3720 Baring St.  After 1894, they lived at 3602 Hamilton St.

 

1889: Marriage of Emma Louise Jenkins of 3703 Powelton Ave. and Joseph S. Bennett

            His family lived at 3410 Race St.

 

1891, April 21: Marriage of Alice Carey Jenkins of 3703 Powelton Ave. to Dr. John G. Fuller of 208 N. 34th St.

           “One of the prettiest and most fashionable weddings of the season was solemnized yesterday in the Northminster Presbyterian Church, Thirty-fifth and Baring streets, when Miss Alice Carey Jenkins was married to Dr. John G Fuller. The ceremony was performed by the pastor of the church, the Rev. Robert H Fulton, D. D., assisted by J. Addison Henry, D. D., of Princeton Presbyterian Church.

            “The bridesmaids were Miss Eleanor List, Miss Lilian Fitler, Miss Bertha Welsh [3419 Hamilton St.], Miss Mary Lowery, and Miss Ella Fuller, sister of the groom. The ushers were Albert E. Hoskins; of New York, Robert E. Foster, of Harrisburg; Dr. Dwight B. Fuller, brother of the groom; Robert H. Jenkins, brother of the bride; Henry F. Cook, Henry G. Riebenack [227 N. 34th St.], Marshall E. Collinsworth and Louis A. Hill.

            “After the ceremony a reception was held at the residence of the bride's father, 3703 Powelton avenue….”

1891, May 20: Death of Catherine K. Allen, 78 years old, of 3703 Powelton Ave.  She was born in Philadelphia.

            She was the widow of John Allen.  In 1870, she was already widowed and living at 3706 Baring St.

 

1897, March 6: Death of Rebecca F. Baker, 74 years old, of 3703 Powelton Ave.  She was born in Philadelphia and was widowed.  She was buried at North laurel Hill Cemetery.

 

1898, Sept. 1: Death of Josephine A. Allen, daughter of the late John and Catherine Allen. Funeral at her late residence, 3703 Powelton Ave.

 

1900, April 25: “A pretty wedding took place on Wednesday at the residence of Mrs. Rachel Allen, 3703 Powelton avenue, when her daughter, Miss Marion Allen, was married to Dr. William Nesbitt Armstrong, of Lock Haven, by Rev. Joseph Wilson Cochran, pastor of Northampton Church.  The bride was given away by her uncle, Colonel W. W. Allen [3417 Hamilton St.].  Miss Mary Armstrong, a sister of the groom, was maid of honor, and the best man was Dr. Summer Shailor, of New York.  A reception followed the ceremony.  Later Dr. and Mrs. Armstrong left for a trip through the South.  They will reside in Lock Haven.” (Phila.             Rachel was the widow of David Allen.  In 1880, they live at 3410 Haverford Ave.  He died August 1, 1884 when they were living at 3811 Powelton Ave.  He was 46 years old and born in Philadelphia.  He was a clerk and the son of John and Catherine Allen.  Burial was at Woodlands Cemetery.

 

1909, Ad: “3703 POWELTON AVE. – Parlor divided into office and waiting room, suitable for physician; occupant can have board and room.”  (Phila. Inquirer, May 2)

            Rachel Allen’s other daughters, Helen K. (Allen) Simpson and Marion (Allen) Armstrong, lived at 317 N. 35th St. and 3632 Powelton Ave. respectively.  (See more at those sites.)

            In 1900, Sarah E. Jones was living at 3417 Hamilton St.  She was a school teacher.

 

1914, Jan. 10: Death of Rachel M. Allen, 70 years old, widow of David Allen. Funeral at her late residence, 3703 Powelton Ave.

            She was the daughter of John Sullivan, who was born in Ireland.  Her mother’s maiden name was Thornton.

 

1915, July 7: Permit issued to Miss H. K. Allen for alterations to dwelling at 3703 Powelton ave.  Cost: $600. (Phila. Inquirer, July 8, 1915)

            Helen K. Allen was a daughter of David and Rachel Allen.

 

1920: 3701 and 3703 were enumerated as one apartment house.  Therefore, some of these individuals may have lived at 3701.
