3410 Hamilton Street

 

 

3408-3410:“two three-story brick Victorian rowhouses with decoratively carved soffit and fascia. Circa 1920 Colonial. Revival porch alteration on 3408; later Colonial Revival porch alteration and repointing to 3410 Contributing.”

History

 

1866, Oct. 9: Transfer of 3405-3411 Baring St. and 3404-3410 Hamilton St. from Gerardus A. Haines to Alexander J. Andrews

 

1869, Feb. 8: Title for 3409-3411 Baring St. & 3408-3410 Hamilton St. transferred to John M. Mole by Alexander J. Andrews

            John M. Mole was a carpenter who was born in England about 1841. He was probably the brother of Thomas H., John, Walter and James Mole all of whom were carpenters. They may have been then sons of a W. Mole who was a builder. All of them were living near 17th St. and Ellsworth in 1866. They probably arrived in the U.S. about 1860 and they all left Philadelphia between 1870 and 1880 except for James.

            John and Elizabeth A. Mole lived in west Philadelphia in 1870, probably west of 40th St. Elizabeth was born in Ireland. She claimed real estate worth $15,000 and personal property valued at $2,000. John Mole was involved in about 50 land sales in Philadelphia between 1869 and 1873, possibly as a builder. He probably left Philadelphia about 1874.

 

1869, July: Deed transferred from John M. Mole to Edward H Pyle & Edmund M. Hansell.

            It is likely that John M. Mole built the basic structure and Pyle and Hansell finished the detailing. The 1870 directory lists Edmund M. Hansell of Pyle & Hansell living at 1334 S. Broad St. The 1871 directory lists him as a sash maker at 3410 Market St. and living on S. 52nd St. near Market St. The 1874 directory lists Edward H. Pyle living at 513 Tasker. The 1870 census lists him as a lumber dealer. In 1880, he and his family were living at 3617 Hamilton St.

            In 1866, they lived at 2023 Fitzwater St. The 1868 directory lists him living at 125 S. 36th St. The 1873 directory lists him at the corner of N. 37th and Chestnut which the 1880 census shows as 3639 Chestnut St.

 

1871 Directory: Storm Francis of Storm Brothers (Gustavus & Francis) ware manufacturers at 3314 Market St.

            In 1880, Gustavus Storm lived at 3301 Race St.

            She lived with her parents at 103 N. 35th St. Her grandparents had also lived in the neighborhood.

 

1904, August 16: “Retired Auctioneer Dead. John W. Powell, a veteran auctioneer and Civil War veteran, died yesterday at his late residence, 3410 Hamilton street. He was for many years Sunday school superintendent and vestryman of St. Andrews’ Church, Thirty-sixth and Baring streets. He was 70 years old.” (Phila. Inquirer, Aug. 17, 1904)

 

1905, July 14: Death of Catherine M. Powell, wife of the late John W. Powell of 3410 Hamilton St.

            The 1918 directory lists George, George, Jr. and Howard living at 4049 Green St. George, Jr. is listed as U.S. Army. Howard is listed as a salesman.

            Howard J. Mower and Frances Beatrice McCall were married in Philadelphia on Jan. 27, 1917.

            In 1930, Howard and Francis lived in Lower Merion. Howard was a trainman for the railroad. They had three children. In 1950, Albert R. Mowrer lived at 9605 Leon St.

 

1920, Jan. 18: Death of Charles H. Mowrer at Camp Dix, N.J., 34 years old, son of George H. and Mary Jane Mowrer of 3410 Hamilton St.

They spoke Hebrew at home. In 1930, they lived at 6507 Selanon Ave. with his wife, Mollie, and their three children. Edward and Mollie. He was working as a salesman in a radio store. In 1942, he registered for the draft from Silver Springs, Md. and gave his year of birth as 1892.
