3701 Powelton Street

 

3701-3703: “Second Empire-style; two-and-one-half story, double; stone facade over brick construction. First-floor full-height windows partially enclosed; porch removed. Applied decorative wood cornice below slate-shingled mansard which has four wood gabled dormers. This double was built with its neighbor 3705-07.”

1865, Dec. 6: Title for Block of land starting at the NW corner of Powelton and N. 37th, proceeding north to 310 N. 37th, then west to Lancaster Ave. transferred to John H. McIlvan by Lydia E. Baring

            The property became part of the McIlvain lumber business.

 

1867, Dec. 4: Title for Block of land starting at the NW corner of Powelton and N. 37th, proceeding north to 310 N. 37th, then west to Lancaster Ave. transferred to Charles J. McIlvain by John H. McIlvan

1879 Directory: James Garrett of J. & J. Garrett (Jessee & James), commercial merchants at 204 Walnut Pl. & building materials at 3122 Chestnut St.

            In 1880, he lived with his wife at 309 N. 33rd St. (See details there.)

 

1879, Oct. 12: Death of Isabella Douglas Baldwin, 40 years old, of 3701 Powelton Ave. She was born in Philadelphia and was single. Burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

            The city directories for 1873 and 1874 list Max Riebenack living at 3718 Baring St.

 

1887 Directory: William Rauch

            Frederick William Rauch was Max Riebenack’s stepbrother. In 1900, he was living with the Riebenack family at 227 N. 34th St.

 

1889 Directory: Riebenack, Max, ass’t comptroller, 233 S 4th, h 3701 Powelton Ave.

            The 1890 Directory lists them at 227 N. 34th St., the corner of Powelton Ave. and 34th St., where they lived until his death in 1910. (See his biography at that address.)

            John E. Phillips, tailor, is listed at 3619 Powelton Ave. in the 1887 to 1895 city directories. In 1910, he and his wife, Mary E. (Potts) Phillips, lived at 6301 Sherwood Rd. He stated he was born in Ohio. Their daughter, Florence May Phillips, married Thomas Cooper McCahan (3419 Baring St.) on June 8, 1898.

 

1902 Philadelphia Inquirer:  “Watson, Huckel & Co., architects are preparing… plans for remodeling the residence of Joseph Brannen at 3701 Powelton avenue.”  (July 17)

 

1903 Ad: “3701 Powelton avenue, 14 rooms…. $55.00 [per month]” (Inquirer, May 3)

1917, Feb. 7: Death of John T. Blake, 62 years old, of carcinoma of the pharynx

            In 1910, he and his family were lodgers at 3703 Hamilton St.

 

1920: Note – 3701 and 3703 were enumerated as one apartment house.

            In 1900, Harriett B. Lavarelle lived at 304 N. 35th St.

            In 1900, Bertha (Hallowell) Long lived at 3303 Lancaster Ave. with her son Allen M. Long, an insurance agent. Allen died on Dec. 2, 1902 at age 30 when living at 3215 Race St. She was married to Charles F. Long (1846-1889), a railroad clerk. He died Dec. 24, 1889 when they were living at 202 N. 36th St. In 1880, they lived at 2106 Jefferson St. with her mother, Elizabeth L. Hallowell. Allen was baptized at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, but he and Bertha later belonged to The Church of the Saviour (Episcopal).

            In 1900, Lidie and Laura Alexander lived at 408 N. 38th St. They were the daughters of Western Alexander (born abt. 1819), a butcher. In 1880, they lived with her father and brother, Davis C., at 628 Union St. Lidie was listed at Eliza.

 

1922, Oct. 16: Death of Jennie G. Pratt, widow of William A. Pratt. Funeral at her late residence, 3701 Powelton Ave.

 

1926, Jan. 10: Death of Bertha (Hallowell) Long, 73 years old; burial at Woodlands Cemetery
