The History of the Building

 

3704-3718: “three-story Italianate doubles, with bracketed flat overhanging roof, stuccoed; side projecting bays…  3714 - Circa 1930 second-floor addition with later permastone; porch altered…”

Previous Residents

 

1862 Directory: James English, bookkeeper, and Henry English living at 3714 Hampton Place.

            The 1861 directory lists James English living on Hamilton above 33rd St.

            The 1860 census lists James English (age 28) living with his wife, Fanny (25), and their two children: Mary A. (4) and Harry P. (1). In 1870, they lived at 413 N. 38th St. They had four additional children and he was working as a commission merchant.

 

1866 Directory: James English, worked at 218 N. Broad St.

 

1866, Dec. 15: Death of Susan Turner, 50 years old, of 3714 Baring St.

 

1870, Apr. 9: Title transferred to Michael Riley by William P. Hamm

            Riley bought 3716 and 3718 Baring St. at the same time.

 

1870:

Charles Jenkins            30        Dry goods dealer; no real estate (apparently renting) personal: $1,500.

                        The 1866 directory lists Charles A. Jenkins, salesman at 47 N. 3rd St., living at the SE corner of 36th & Hamilton Sts. (3512 Hamilton St.). In 1880, they lived at 3720 Baring St. After about 1894, they lived at 3602 Hamilton St. Gertrude and Louisa (then a widow) were still living there in 1930.

 

1873 Directory (Fall 1872): George W. Snyder telegraph operator

                         Nicholas J. Snyder, Jr., clerk

            They are the sons of Nicholas J. Snyder. The 1871 directory lists them living at 1339 S. 8th St. The 1878 directory lists Nicholas, Sr. and Jr. and George living at 3708 Hamilton St. Other family members of listed there in the 1880 census.

1881, Oct. 27: “The death by apoplexy of Mr. Stephen C. Foulk, one of the oldest carpet dealers in this city occurred at his residence, No. 3714 Baring st., on Thursday night. Mr. Foulk was aged sixty-five years. He had been in business on Second street for more than fifty years.”  (Phila. Inquirer, Oct. 29)

            The 1895 directory lists “John C. Potteiger, hotel, 3817 Market.”  He died in 1924 at age 72 when they were living at 4029 Powelton Ave.

1906, Dec. 9: Death of Charles Brennan, 72 years old, of 3714 Baring St. He was born in Ireland. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.

1908, July 30: Title transferred to Edward A. Kelly by Elizabeth F. Brennan

 

1910:

Anna S. Alexander       49        “Own income;” she was widowed. She had had 3 children, 2 were surviving; renting

Elizabeth M. Sage        53        Sister; purchasing agent; single

Marguarite Alexander   23        Daughter; secretary for private family; born in Missouri, father born in Scotland

Mildred Alexander       11        Daughter; father born in Scotland

            Anna Curtis (Sage) Alexander was the widow of John Stuart Lowe Alexander who died in 1907. He was an importer born in Scotland. They were married in Philadelphia in 1885. In 1900, they all lived in Radnor. In 1920, Ann and Mildred were living at 5110 Spruce St. Ann was working as a bookkeeper at the Navy Yard.

 

1912, July 25: Title transferred to W. Dayton Phillips and his wife by Edward A. Kelly

 

1916: For rent: “3714 Baring, 12r, $40” (Inquirer, Oct. 1)

Then immediately transferred to Jane M. Simons.

1930:

Jane, Mary and Katherine Simons were the daughters of Joseph and Mary Simons. In 1910, they all lived at 3512 Brandywine St. Joseph was a coachman for a private family. By 1920, Joseph had died and the family was living at 423 N. 32nd St.

 

1932, May 23: Title transferred to Dorothy C. Mellon by Jane M. Simons

            Then immediately transferred to Jane M. Simons and Mary A. Simons.

 

1940: This house was apparently missed in the census.

 

1950 Directory: Mary A. Simons

 

1950, Oct. 22: Death of Mary Agatha Simons, 60 years old, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Burke Simons of 3714 Baring St. The informant for the death certificate was Jane M. Simons of 3714 Baring St. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.
