3700 Hamilton Street

The History of the Building

1866, Mar. 30: Title for south side of the 3700 block of Hamilton St. transferred to Richard Peltz by Lydia E. Baring

1866, Oct. 1: Title for south side of the 3700 block of Hamilton St. transferred to Mary Peltz by Richard Peltz

Mary Peltz may have been the sister of Richard Peltz who lived at and owned 3701 Baring St.

3700 and 3702 were built at the same time in a transitional Italianate style very similar to 3701-03 Baring St. behind them. They lacked a few of the more elaborate features on 3701-03 such as the brick window surrounds and the stone belt-course above the second floor. 3700 was later modified with Colonial Revival entries on the front and side, possibly in the early twentieth century. 3702 was demolished.

“three-story, three-register red brick house with flat roof, Adamesque door surround and pediment; modillioned cornice. Second Adamesque entrance from North 37th Street. –Contributing”

(Inventory of Buildings in Powelton from the application submitted to the National Register of Historic Places, 1985)
