The History of the Building

 

3621-3631: “three-story red brick Victorian rowhouse; two registers with segmental stone lintels, decorative carved wood cornices and brackets…. all but 3625 (Victorian porch) have circa 1905 Colonial Revival porches.”

1869, October: Deeds for 3625-3631 Hamilton transferred from Thomas Foster to John M. Mole.

            3621-3623 Hamilton were included in a similar transaction in February of that year.

 

1870, March: Deeds for 3621-3631 Hamilton transferred from John M. Mole to John K. McCurdy.

 

1871, April: Deed transferred from Thomas Foster to John L. Hill.

 

1880:

1881 Directory: Albert K. Thompson (Kibbe, Chaffee & Co.)

            Kibbe & Chaffee& Co. sold knitted goods. They were located at 236 Chestnut St. in Philadelphia and had outlets in New York and several other cities.

 

1882, September: Deed transferred from John L. Hill to Robert W. Liberton.

            Robert W. Liberton was listed in the 1880 census as a sheriff’s officer. The family was living at 17 Juniper St.

1891, April 16: Marriage of Clara H. Liberton to William Ewing (3715 Hamilton St.)  by Rev. Henry C. McCook, D.D. at the home of her parents.

            Clara was 11 years old at the time of the 1880 census.

 

1891, June 6: Death of Robert W. Liberton

 

1895: Permit Issued to Frederick V. Yeager, contractor, for a one-story brick and frame kitchen, 12x10 at 3629 Hamilton St. (Inquirer, Oct. 8)

1901, July: Deed transferred from John W. & Kate L. (wife) Liberton to Augustus L. Keil.

 

1906: Permit issued to Joseph Price for a wood and brick porch, 10x16 for Augustus Keil.

 

1910:

Nannie Cowley            35        Servant; black; married 3 years, 1 deceased child; born in Va.

            The 1891 directory lists him as a clerk living at 211 S. 33rd St. It lists Peter Keil, Jr., a foreman, living at the same address. In 1900, they lived at 4209 Viola St. In 1860, his grandfather, Jacob Keil, was a landlord in Sharpsburg, Allegheny Co., Pa. Jacob and his wife, Dorthea, were born in Germany. Rebecca Alice Clark Keil was from Butler, Pa. In 1880, her father was a farmer.

 

1911, Dec. 20: Death of Augustus Louden Keil, Jr., 17 months old, son of Augustus Louden and Rebecca Clark Keil

 

1918, Aug.: “Private Keil., Company M, 109th Infantry. Reported missing in action on July 15, 1918. He was eighteen years old, and enlisted in the old First Regiment, N. G. P., in May, 1917. He received his training at Camp Hancock, and sailed for France in May, 1918. The last letter received by his parents was dated June 27, 1918. Prior to enlisting he was a student at West Philadelphia High School. He lived with his father, at 3629 Hamilton street.” (Evening Public Ledger, 8/16/1918)

 

1918, Sept.: Private R. H. Keil, listed as a prisoner at Camp Limburg (Evening Pub Ledger, Sept. 9, 1918)

 

1919: “The War Department announced today the names of one officer and 264 enlisted men of the American expeditionary force, who have arrived in France after being released from the German prison camp at Rastatt…. Among the enlisted men from this city are:… Robert H. Kiel, 3629 Hamilton street….” (Phila. Inquirer, Jan. 4, 1919)

            Gladys (Proctor) Rule married Robert Henry Keil in 1928. It was the second marriage for both. In 1930, they lived at 3700 Hamilton St.

1939, Mar. 28: Marriage of Rebecca A. Keil (21 years-old) of 3629 Hamilton St. and John J. Tarditi (22) of 817 Atwood Rd. at Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church.

 

1940:

Augustus Keil              69        Accountant; 2 years of college, owner house valued at $3,000

Rebecca Keil               62        4 years of college

 

1940, September: Deed transferred from Augustus L. & Rebecca C. (wife) Keil to Augustus L. & Rebecca C. (wife) Keil.

 

1947, December: Deed transferred from Augustus L. & Rebecca C. (wife) Keil to Rebecca C. Keil.

 

1950 Directory: August L. Keil

            He died June 14, 1958 in Spray Beach, Ocean, N. J. Rebecca died Dec. 25, 1963 in Lakewood, N.J.

 

1950, Dec. 12: Death of Alida Constance Doyle of 3629 Hamilton St. She was formerly of Spray Beach, NJ.
