The History of the Building

 

3602 was originally a single house on a double-sized corner lot.  It is now part of an apartment building at 3600-3606 Spring Garden St. which was built in 1929.

1900:

Albina G. Smith           52        Widowed, no children; renting

J. Siddons Griffith       83        Father; retired merchant; widowed

Ida L. Griffith              47        Sister; single

            John Siddons Griffith was widowed before 1860.  In 1870, the Griffiths lived at 3207 Baring St.  and in 1880, they were at 3700 Hamilton St.  In 1910, Albina Smith & the Griffith lived at 3407 Baring St.

Mary Ely                      40        Married 21 years; born in N.J.

            The 1896 directory lists Eugene Ely at 3517 Hamilton St.

Frances H. Platt           55        Widowed, one child; mother born in N.J.

Dallas H. Platt             22        Passenger department, Pennsylvania Railroad father born in N.J.

Mary W. Campbell       67        Widowed, 11 children, 7 surviving; born in N.Y., parents born in Maryland

Alice D. Campbell       30        School teacher; mother born in N.Y.

Helen B. Campbell      29        Mother born in N.Y.

Lucy C. Campbell        27        School teacher; mother born in N.Y.

            Mary Whycoff (Corse) Campbell was the widow of Edward Sinclair Campbell, a lawyer, who died in 1894.  They were living at 531 Vine St.  In 1910, Alice, Helen and Lucy were living at 257 S. 44th St.  Alice and Lucy were kindergarten teachers.

Nettie Hackett             21        Servant, cook; black; born in Va.

Rosa Weaver               26        Servant, waiter; black; born in Va.

Rebecca M. Ely            20        Boarder; at school; born in N.J.

Alonza Taylor              17        Servant; black; born in N.C.

            Alice J. Wiltberger was the daughter of Theodore and Sarah Wiltberger.  She was born about 1843 in West Philadelphia.  In 1910, she (like the Griffiths) lived at 3407 Baring St.  She died in March 1920 while living at 3420 Race St.

            Rebecca Mulford Ely was the daughter of Eugene and Mary B. (Mulford) Ely.  She was a student at Swarthmore.  In 1905, she married Herbert Paul King.

            Francis Hart (Hall) Platt was the widow of William Henry Platt (1844-1893).

 

1902, Aug. 5: Death of Eugene L. Ely, 41 years old, of 3602 Spring Garden St.; burial in Millville, Cumberland Co., New Jersey.  His occupation was listed as trust co. clerk.  He was the son of Smith and Almena Ely.
