3702 Hamilton Street

 

The History of the Building

 

This house was demolished.

 

“3700 and 3702 were built at the same time, c1869, and in a transitional Italianate style very similar to 3701-03 Baring St. behind them.  They lacked a few of the more elaborate features on 3701-03 such as the brick window surrounds and the stone belt-course above the second floor.  3700 was later modified with Colonial Revival entries on the front and side, possibly in the early twentieth century.”

3702 had a mansard roof installed in 1895 (see below).

                                    The 1868 Directory lists Michael Riley, restaurant at corner of Market & N. 31st St., living at 3712 Hamilton St.

(           The 1872 directory lists Henry C. League living next door at 3706 Hamilton St.  About that time, he married Mary Riley.  They remained in the neighborhood until the late 1890s when he was committed to the Home for the Incurables at 48th and Woodland.  He died at his son’s house, 3726 Hamilton St., in 1912.

 

c1874: Marriage of Rose Riley to Nicholas J. Snyder, Jr. of 3714 Hamilton St.

            In 1878, they lived at 3708 Hamilton St. with his family.  He died in 1879.

            "DEATH OF A TELEGRAPHER - N. J. Snyder, a well known telegraph operator of this city, died yesterday afternoon, at five o'clock, at Kane, Pa., where he had gone for the benefit of his health. For the past few years he has been in the employ of Messrs. Drexel & Co., of this city."  (Inquirer, July 12, 1879)

 

1874, Philadelphia Inquirer: “Michael Bradley [sic.], Chauncey F. Sargent, and Harry C. League, who keep a tavern and news agency at No. 3702 Hamilton street, were charged with selling liquor on Sunday.  The charge was brought by Joseph Flager, who was employed by the accused to attend to their eating bar.  He saw the liquor sold and he heard League order the bar-keep to sell it.  The accused were each held in $800 bail for trial.” (April 15, 1874)

1881, Dec. 19: Marriage of Laura Riley to John Lewis Kates, Jr. They were married at the Church of the Ascension (Episcopal), Gloucester, N.J.

 

1885 & 1886 Directories: J. Louis Kates, clerk

            In the census for 1900 to 1920 J. Louis and Laura (Riley) Kates lived at 217 N. 34th St.  For more information, see that address.

1895, Philadelphia Inquirer: “PERMITS… George Graham, contractor, adding mansard roof to three-story dwelling at 3702 Hamilton street.”

 

1898, July 3: Death of Caroline Mortimer Riley, 65 years old, of 3702 Hamilton St. Died in Mt. Pocono, Pa.  Burial at Woodland Cemetery.

 

1899, Philadelphia Inquirer: Application for a liquor license for the Broad Street Station, Michael Riley, 3702 Hamilton St. (Feb. 16, 1898)

 

1900:

1902 Directory: Harry M. League, clerk

            The 1900 census shows him living at 3716 Hamilton St.

 

1907, Dec. 22: Death of Michael Riley, 79 years old; funeral from his late residence.  He was buried at Woodlands Cemetery with the service performed by Rev. Biggs.

 

1909, Oct.: 3702 Hamilton St., 16 rooms, offered for rent at $65 per month.  (Phila. Inquirer)

 

1910, April: 3702 Hamilton St. was listed for rent at $65 per month.  In September, this was dropped to $55.  It was still available at the end of November.  It was advertised as 16 rooms with two baths.  (Phila. Inquirer, May 18, Sept. 18, and Nov. 27, 1910)
