1869, Apr. 9: Transfer 3405-3407 Baring St. and 3404-3406 Hamilton St. from Alexander J. Andrews and wife to Robert Glendenning, Jr. trustee.

 

1869, Apr. 23: Transfer from Robert Glendenning, Jr. trustee to Abraham J. McGarry.

 

1870, Feb. 21: Transfer from Abraham J. McGarry and wife to John Doyle, a two-story mansion house with mansard roof.

 

1870, July 7: Transfer from John Doyle to Samuel R. Skillern.

1902, Feb. 13: Transfer from George W. and Elizabeth Fowle (husband and wife), Jane Allison, Attorney in Fact, to William S. Underdown.

 

1903, June 8: Transfer from Eliza Lathbury by Sheriff to Fidelity Trust Co., trustees under deed for John Rhea Burton (Sherriff sale).

 

1906, Jan. 30: Transfer from Fidelity Trust Co., trustees, to Thomas S. Gates.

            In 1912, Thomas S. Gates was Vice President of the Pennsylvania Co. for the Insurance of Lives and became president of the Philadelphia Trust Co. He was president of the University of Pennsylvania 1930-‘44.   Their son, Thomas Jr., served as Secretary of the Navy, 1959-’61.

“Second Empire-style, two-and-one-half story double; first-floor arcuated doorways, projecting bays, and wood porch posts with unifying bracketed cornice and bracketed wood cornice below mansard; 3405 has slate shingles; 3407, asphalt. Each house has paired dormer windows.”

They apparently only lived here for a year or two.  For most of the 1860s, they lived at 3419 Hamilton St.  They lived at 3519 Hamilton St. for a few years before moving to 3416 Baring St.  Later, they lived at 3509 Baring St.

            Elizabeth Penn-Gaskill Skillern, wife of Dr. Samuel R. Skillern died Nov. 23, 1866 at Pulaski, Tenn.  Services were held at St. Andrews Church.

 

 

“P[enn]- G[askill] SKILLERN. Medical School, and was graduated with the Class of 1877. Locating in Philadelphia, he advanced rapidly both in practice and professional standing, and at the present time is one of the best-known physicians in the Quaker City. Dr. Skillern is a member of the Philadelphia Pathological Society and the County Medical Society, the Penn His-torical Society and the University Club of Philadelphia. In politics he is a Republican. He married, October 7, 1879, Anna Dorsey, by whom he has two children: Penn-Gaskell, Jr., and Violet Penn-Gaskell Skillern.”

1873, Feb. 3: Death of Samuel H. Hutchinson, 70 years old, of 3407 Baring St. He was a member of West Philadelphia Monthly Meeting

            He was a conveyancer with his office at 35th and Lancaster Ave.  He was married to Rachel McIlvain (1806-1864), the daughter of Hugh McIlvain.  In Nov. 1870, he lived at 3304 Hamilton St.

            In 1895, Hattie McIlvain bought 3613 Hamilton St.  It was probably an investment because she sold it two years later.  In 1925, she lived in Ardmore.  Charles J. McIlvain died March 31, 1895 when he was living at 3305 Baring St., his parents’ old home.

            In 1900 and 1910, Annic C. Mulville was a servant at 3507 Baring St.

            In 1880, he and his family lived at 3513 Hamilton St.

 

1888, Oct. 2: Marriage of Mary Hannah Lathbury to Francis Shoemaker Walton who lived at 3412 Baring St. in 1880.

            John Siddons Griffith was widowed before 1860.  In 1870, the Griffiths lived at 3207 Baring St. and in 1880, they were at 3700 Hamilton St.  In 1900, they lived at 3602 Spring Garden St.

            Alice J. Wiltberger was the daughter of Theodore and Sarah Wiltberger.  She was born about 1843 in West Philadelphia.  In 1900, she (like the Griffiths) lived at 3602 Spring Garden St.  She died in March 1920 while living at 3420 Race St.

            Henry E. Pretty lived at 3705 Spring Garden St. with his widowed mother in 1900.  He was the son of Edwin Pretty and Albina Weaver and was born in 1863 in Philadelphia.  His father was born in England.  His mother’s parents were born in Ireland.

            Frank Clyde Hornbeck was born in Ridgeway, Pa. in 1887.  He and Elsie D. Turner were married in Philadelphia in 1912.  In 1920, they lived at 210 S. 17th St.  In 1942, they were living at 4114 Spruce St. and Joseph was at 25 Sunders Ave.  Frank died in 1958, Elsie in 1976, and Beale B. Hornbeck in 1967.  They were buried together at Valley Forge.

            In 1918, Eleuterio Lopez married Rose McLaughlin in Philadelphia.  In 1930, all four of them lived at 6050 Greenway Ave. in southwest Philadelphia.

 

1942 WW II Draft Registration: Henry Eleutrio Lopez, age 52, born in El Paso, Texas.  He worked for Westinghouse Manuf. Co., Lester, Pa.  Telephone: EVR 3835. He was married to Rose Lopez.

 

1942 WWII Draft Registration: McLaughlin James, He worked for the New York Ship Building Corp., Camden, N.J. He was born July 29, 1917.

 

1942, Nov. 22: Marriage license issued to Ann M. Morris of 1413 N. 29th St. and James McLaughlin of 3407 Baring St.

 

1946, Mar. 14: “Supported by five churches as a way to bring companionship to men and women ‘in the twilight years,” the Golden Age Club celebrated its first birthday yesterday at the Northminster Presbyterian Church, 35th and Baring Sts…. On occasion, Mrs. Susan Reutersward, 89, of 3407 Baring st., entertains at the piano. She says her fingers are becoming a little still now, but she enjoys playing old tunes from memory.” (Inquirer)

            Jan E. G. Smit was born in The Hague, Holland. He married Sally Ruth Holt in Los Angeles Aug. 29, 1949. Their marriage was also noted in The Hague, Holland. He was at the University of Leiden. He was the son of Dr. H. P. Smit. They later lived in Santa Ynez, Santa Barbara, Calif. He was apparently later involved with the Asian Society and was apparently associated with the University of Pennsylvania when he lived here.
