3412 Baring as it was in the late 1980’s

 

3412-14: “Italianate, three-story double with Circa 1905 Colonial Revival porch and fluted pilasters on stone pedestals, dentillated cornice and dentillated second-floor lintels. Third-floor windows are partially divided paired arcuated windows. Overhanging flat roof; paired large ornate bracketsand smaller simpler ones”

The History

 

1865 Directory (compiled fall 1864): Rev. John Moore, Baring bel 35th

            The 1864 directory lists John G. Moore, teacher, 132 N. 10th St.

            His wife, Anna E. (White) Moore, was the sister of Martha (White) Fullerton who lived at 3307 Hamilton St. The Fullerton’s daughters studied at the seminary run at this address by their uncle.

 

1866 Directory: Rev. John Moore, Baring bel 35th

 

1865, August: “MANTUA FEMALE SEMINARY, Baring ST., BELOW Thirty-Fifth, West Philadelphia. A Day and Boarding School for Young Ladies. The next Term will open September 4th. For Circulars, apply to Rev. John Moore, Principal.”

            This might have included both 3412 and 3414 Baring St.

1867, Aug. 10: “Mrs. B. M. Norman and Miss A. L. Reynolds will open, September 18, their Seminary for Young Ladies, at 3412 Baring Street, West Philadelphia. Circulars may be obtained at Messrs. Bailey & Co.’s No. 819 Chestnut Street.” (Inquirer)

            Mrs. Dillingham’s maiden name was Mary Elizabeth Raymond.

            In Sept., 1862 to May, 1866, he was listed in the IRS Tax List at 734 Arch St. This may have been his office.

            In 1880, they lived at 4042 Chestnut St. Albert Kelton was a Lieutenant in the U.S. marine Corps.

1887 Directory: Bonsall, Elwood (Bonsall Bros.) & treas., 904 Filbert, h 3412 Baring

            In 1890, he lived at 219 N. 34th St. and later he lived at 208 N. 35th St.

 

1891 Directory: Lewis Hernz, clerk

                         Sanders McSparran of Griest, Pownall & Co. grain dealers, corner of Market and N. 32nd St.

                                    In 1889, both L. M. Hernz and McSparran lived at 3603 Baring St. In 1895, McSparren lived at 4063 Spring Garden St.

                                    Louis Hernz was a civil engineer who was born in Cuba. He and his wife lived at 3519 Hamilton St. in 1900.

            In 1890 City Directory, he is listed as a car builder at 3523 Filbert St.

            In 1900, they we living at 411 N. 33rd St. and he was a manufacturer of fencing.

            “The Wayne Iron Works has been identified with much of the elevation and bridge work of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company during recent years and has installed above one hundred miles of pipe railings, bridge railings and other forms of iron fencing during that time.

“The company was incorporated in 1893.

            Its works are located at Wayne, Pa., and the officers of the company are George W. Powell, president, and C. M. Wetzel, treasurer.

            “As is obvious, railroad contracts are a specialty of the company, and their large and rapidly increasing business may be ascribed to quality of product, reasonable prices, and facilities for handling contracts of the largest size.”

            George W. Powell died Aug. 6, 1917.

 

1910, Dec. 20: Marriage license issued to Anna S. Powell of 3412 Baring St. and Albert C. Wood of 1317 Spruce St.

 

1915, May 24: Obituary - “Simons. – On Monday, May 24, 1915, Margaret Naudain Simons, widow of M. Laird Simons. Relatives and friends are invited to funeral services... at the residence of her son, Laird H. Simons, 3412 Baring st.

            Laird H. Simmons and Amelia D. Alexander were married in 1914. He was living in Glenside and she was living with her parents at 306 N. 35th St. In 1911, he was living at 1117 Walnut St.

 

 

1921, December: Deed transferred from Robert Steen (W. Austin Obdyke - Trustee under Will of Robert Steen dec'd) to Laird H. Simons.

 

1929, May: Deed transferred from Laird H. Simons and Amelia A., his wife, to Alice C. Hart.

 

1930:

            Euretta attended Bryn Mawr. The 1936 Yearbook lists her address as 1239 Remington Rd., Wynnewood, Pa. In 1940, Euretta and Laird Simons, Jr. were living with their aunt and cousins at 3417 Race St. (See their yearbook photos at that address.)

 

1940:

            In 1920, Mrs. Candace Scott was living in Akron, Ohio. The 1921 directory of Philadelphia listed her at 310 N. 33rd St. In 1930, she lived at 3422 Powelton Ave. They all lived in Philadelphia on Jan. 1, 1935. In 1900, the Scott family lived in Richland, Guernsey Co., Ohio where Winfield was a physician, the son of James Scott. He died in 1909. Bernice Scott was born June 28, 1880; therefore, she was 60 years old. She was married to Alfred A. J. Hoge (or Hogg).

            Candace Scott died March 27, 1943 and was buried in Senecaville, Guernsey County, Ohio.

            In 1910, John W. Bradley lived at 3622 Powelton Ave. He worked as a machinist and, later, as a foreman for the railroad. In 1920, he lived at the Sunderland Apartments and in 1930, he lived at 3323 Powelton Ave.

1965: The Powelton Post announced the move of Sho and Joan Maruyama to 3412 in the September issue.

            They previously lived at 3409 Baring St. See their photo and profile from the Powelton Post on that page.

 

1965, November:  The Powelton Post included the following: “This month's glimpse at movings and shakings in the Village heads the list with the MARUYAMAS' open house - and what a house! The front porch could accommodate folk dancing, and the inside did accommodate a goodly portion of the neighborhood. How did you like that huge sliding panel window in the bedroom and the sunken bathroom?”

 

1971: Joan Maruyama expressed her worry that Frank Rizzo might be elected. She preferred Anthony Williams “mainly be default.” (Inquirer, March 28)

 

1978: Sold by Sho and Joan Maruyama to Jams J. and Kerry G. Murphy for $135,000 (Inquirer, Jan. 3)

 

1996, Aug. 25: For sale: 3412 Baring, $229,500. New! Magnif Powelton Village Itallianate! Total renov w/lush spaces, new kit, break rm, Jacuzzi, greenhse, polished pine flrs, off st pkg, yard!” (Inquirer)
