The History

 

1864 and 1865 IRS lists: Charles J. Field is listed at Baring St., below 35th with an income of $4,400.

            The 1861 Directory lists FIELD & HARDIE (Charles J. Field & James G. Hardie) hardware 633 Market.

            In May, 1864, the IRS listed him at 824 S. 4th St with an income of $6,500.

 

1866, March 8: Death of Harry G. Field, 4 months years old, son of Charles J. and Claire W. Freed [sic.] of 35th & Baring Streets

            He was a Trustee of the Penn Mutual insurance Co.

            In 1880, they lived at 3502 Powelton Ave.

            In 1870, they lived at 3407 Baring St. However, about 8 before and several years after 1870, they lived at 3419 Hamilton St. Penn Gaskill Skillern was the son of Samuel and his first wife, Elizabeth Penn-Gaskill Skillern (1825-1866).

            “P. G. SKILLERN: Medical School, and was graduated with the Class of 1877. Locating in Philadelphia, he advanced rapidly both in practice and professional standing, and at the present time is one of the best-known physicians in the Quaker City. Dr. Skillern is a member of the Philadelphia Pathological Society and the County Medical Society, the Penn Historical Society and the University Club of Philadelphia. In politics he is a Republican. He married, October 7, 1879, Anna Dorsey, by whom he has two children : Penn-Gaskell, Jr., and Violet Penn-Gaskell Skillern.”

            From 1885 to about 1918, the Skillern family lived at 3509 Baring.

 

1887 Directory: Horace G. Hill, physician

            Horace G. Hill and Virginia Bennett were married in 1886. He was living at 314 N. 33rd St. and she was living with her parents at 3410 Race St.

 

1889 Directory: Joseph S. Bennett druggist

 

1892, Dec. 25: Death of Joseph S. Bennett, 70 years old, of 3416 Baring St.

            He was Horace G. Hill’s father-in-law. The Bennett family lived previously at 3410 Race St.

 

1895 Directory lists Horace G. Hill, medical director 914 Walnut, physician 3416 Baring.

            “HILL, Horace Greenwood, A.M., M.D.---Class of 1879---Williams College -Physician- [residence] 3416 Baring St. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania---MD Jefferson Medical College, 1882, medical director Fidelity Mutual Life Assoc.; resident physician Presbyterian Hospital; died 14th Feb 1901.”    (Sixth Decennial Catalogue of the Chi Psi Fraternity, Auburn, NY  1902)

 

1897, June 30: “Architect Albert W. Dilks, 1001 Chestnut street, having completed plans for alteration and addition to 3416 Baring street, for the estate of Robert Steen, has awarded the contract for work to C. F.             “The grandfather of Christian B. was David Longenecker; born in Lancaster, Pa.; died February 24th, 1882, in Philadelphia; merchant. His wife's name was Susan E. Jungling, whose ancestors came from Germany. Their children were Henry and Jerome.

            “The great-grandfather of Christian B. was Henry Longenecker; born in Lancaster County; died in Lancaster, Pa.; merchant.”

            They were married in Franklin Co., Pa. She was living in Waynesboro where the 1870 census listed her living with her parents, Peter and Sarah L. Dock. Peter worked at a machine shop. In 1880, her father was deceased and she was working as a clerk in a post office. Christian was born in Franklin Co. but was living in Newark N.J. His occupation was listed as engineer.

 

1937, Oct. 24: For rent: “3416 Baring. Lge. Comfortable funr. 2d flr, R, haskpg. rm., plenty heat & hot water, $6.50 wk. Also single furn. Rm. $3. Refined surroundings. Also gar. $5 mo.” (Inquirer)

 

1939 Sept. 27: For rent: “Furn warm frt. Rm. 3416 Baring st., $4 wk. Hskpg. Opt. cont. h. w. of MAYFAIR 1187.” (Inquirer)

1969, Feb. 13: “A 24-year-old former physical therapist at Philadelphia General Hospital who was drafted into the Army six weeks ago was one of three recruits who died of infectious meningitis at Fort Bragg, N. C. it was learned Wednesday.

            “He was Pvt. Nathanial Harrison Williams, Jr., of 3416 Baring st., who died last Saturday….

            “Williams, a native of Indiana, was a premdical student at Indiana University and was graduated in 1967. He studied physical therapy at the University of Pennsylvania for one year and worked at the Philadelphia General Hospital for six months prior to induction.

            “Surviving are his wife, the former Sharon Harper, to whom he was married last Nov. 9; his mother… two brothers… and a sister.” (Inquirer)

 

1969, Oct. 5: “Chester born Negro poet Clarence Maloney will give a reading of his work at 2:30 P. M. Thursday in the first of ‘Living Poets’ lectures cosponsored by Temple University’s English department and its Samuel Paley Library Cultural Events program….

            “Maloney, [is] a 29-year-old cum laude graduate of Temple.…

            “The poet, of 3416 Baring st., Philadelphia, is also active in civic affairs, including work with the Philadelphia Human Commission, the Hartranft Community Corporations, and the Greater Philadelphia Enterprises Development Corporation.” (Inquirer)

 

1996, Dec. 3: “Grace Jones will get a surprise when she plays Egypt Thursday. East Fall’s Harry Jay Katz will present her with the nude shots she presented with her bunny application when Katz was trying to found a Playboy Club at Broad and Walnut Streets. On her Jan. 20, 1970, application… ‘Grace Mendoza,’ the 21, listed her address as 3416 Baring St. her previous job as a $25-a-night go-go dancer at Camden’s Oasis Motor Hotel, and hobbies as sewing and roller skating.” (Inquirer)
