The History of the Building

 

3410-3420 Race St. are shown on the 1872 G. M. Hopkins Atlas

 

3418-3420: “two-and-one-half story Second Empire style stone double with original dormers with arched, window heads in slate shingled mansard. circa 1895 Colonial Revival alterations included. replacing porch with simple post balustrade and wood Tuscan columns, and adding wood paneled projecting and flat bay windows to front. Original scroll and bracket cornice intact.”

Previous Residents

 

c1871: John H. Murphy purchased the property from the builders, John Shedwick and his son James C. Shedwick. They lived at 3624 Baring St. They built a home for themselves at 3408 Race St. and moved there about 1872.

 

1872: The G. M. Hopkins Atlas lists the owner as J. H. Murphy

 

1874 Directory: John H. Murphy, president at 42 N. 5th St.

 

1876 Ad: “Modern Residence, S. E. cor. Thirty-Fifth and Race Sts. The house contains 13 rooms, every convenience in excellent order; fine garden. Will be rented if desired. Fred Sylvester, No. 203 S. Sixth Street.”  (Phila. Inquirer, Dec. 2)

            The 1889 Directory gives his address as Merion.

 

1895 Directory: Anna O. Goepp, teacher

                                    The 1891 directory lists her at 204 N. 35th St.

                         Charles Goepp

                         Max Goepp, teacher

                         Philip H. Goepp, music teacher at 101 S. 15th St.

                                    The 1889 directory gives his address as 204 N. 35th St. (see his bio. there). The 1891 directory lists Philip H. Goepp, lawyer, 1430 S. Penn Sq., 1632 Chestnut St.

            Philip H. Goepp was the author of Symphonies and their Meaning, 1913.

            In 1920, Lily and her three daughters lived in Lower Merion, Montgomery Co., Pa. Lily was widowed. In 1930, they lived in Narberth, Montgomery Co., Pa. All three daughters were still single.

 

1911-1913 Directories: Elbertine C. Sellers, music teacher

                                    Katherine F. Sellers, notary

                        They were the daughters of Charles C. and Emmeline B. Sellers. In 1900, they lived at 434 N. 34th St. Charles died in 1905 when they were living at 3218 Baring St. (aka 319 N. 33rd St.). In 1910, Elbertine and her daughters were living at 3411 Race St.  Their mother died at age 83 on June 13, 1916 when she was living at 207 S. 46th St.

 

1916 Directory: D. Fuller Stewart, architect

            He was a member of the Tenth Presbyterian Church at 38th and Hamilton Sts.

1920, Mar. 11: Death of Alice J. Wiltberger, 76 years old, of 3420 Race St.; burial at Woodlands Cemetery

 

1945, Nov. 24: Death of Anna Bunn Wright, 68 years old; burial at West Laurel Hill Cemetery
