The
History of the Building
The
northern edge of this property was part of the northern boundary of the
Bingham-Baring estate.
Probably built by George Herbert, a home builder who
owned both properties and lived next
door at 3303 Hamilton St. in 1870.
“two-and-one-half story half a double;
neighbor demolished. Stuccoed facade; heavy modillioned cornice at porch; later
wrought front posts; Colonial Revival first-floor projecting bay and heavy
dentillated cornice. Full-height mansard floor with polychromatic, patterned
slate shingles.”

1866, October: Deed transferred from Alfred B. Justice to Thomas
C. Taylor.
Alfred B. Justice was a hardware merchant
who lived at 319 N. 33rd St.
Thomas C. Taylor also bought 3301 Hamilton St. and lived there in 1870 and 1880.

The 1868 directory listed him as a
plasterer living here.
1868, April: Deed transferred from Thomas C. Taylor to George
Herbert.
George Herbert was a carpenter and
home builder who lived next door at 3303 Hamilton St.
in 1870.
1869, January: Deed transferred from George Herbert to John
Daniel Baltz.
John David Baltz grew up in Mantua
and became a conveyancer.

The 1870-1873 directories lists him
living at 419 N. 38th St. Jesse Supplee was a civil engineer. In the
first enumeration, he listed $1,000 in personal property, but no real estate.
Their daughter was listed at Marie in the first enumeration.

Supplee.
1872, May: Deed transferred from Jesse Supplee to William Patton.

Robert Holm and Sara M. Eggeling were married in Philadelphia in 1930. In 1940,
they were living next door at 3307 Hamilton St.
The 1950 directory lists him around the corner at 409 N.
33rd St. He
died in 1974 in Merion Station, Pa.
John Cecil Holm was a writer, director and performer. His
most famous work was Three Men on a Horse, one of the great ribald comedies of the 1930s, which he
co-authored with George Abbott. It ran on Broadway for 835 performance in
1935-1937. A film version was released in 1936. It was subsequently revived for
limited runs on Broadway in 1942, 1970, and 1993. There were two television
versions in 1950 and 1957 (for Playhouse 90). As a performer, he starred
with Nanette Fabray in the musical Mr. President with music by Irving
Berlin and directed by Josh Logan that ran for 265 performances in 1962-‘63. He
also appeared in the original cast of Forty Carets with Julie Harris in
1968. He died in

Bair Holm, 63 years old, wife of Charles Hedley Holm of 3305 Hamilton St. She
was born in Osborne, Kansas. Internment in Lancaster Co.
“In a footnote to her will
Mrs. Lulu Holm, 3305 Hamilton st., mother of John Cecil Holm, playwright,
expressed a fear of being buried alive. After bequeathing her $3300 estate to
her husband, Charles Hedley Holm, she wrote:
“Have fear of being
buried alive – please see that undertaker does a sure job. Lulu Holm.” (Inquirer,

Cuba. She died Philadelphia State Hospital if heart disease. In the 1930s, she
and her family lived at 3211 Baring St.
