1860 Directory (Fall, 1859): Richard Clements, Hamilton near 36th St.

            The 1859 city directory lists Richard Clements, M.D. 228 S. Broad (possibly an office address)

            In 1853, he was listed as a lay deputy in the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of Philadelphia.… Richard Clements, M. D.

1861, March 14: Death of Richard Clements, M.D., 36 years old, of 3510 Hamilton St., suddenly in Gambier, Ohio

 

1863 IRS Records: John Blakely, income of $1,979.50 in 1862 at “Hamilton below 36th.”

            The 1862 directory lists John Blakeley, cotton waste at 6 N. 3rd St., home 36th & Grape (now Melon) St., Mantua.  The 1861 directory lists him as a laborer living at Ridge Ave., Roxbury.

 

1864 Directory: John Blakely, dealer in cotton cleaning waste, 233 Church al [sic.], h Hamilton above 35th, Mantua

 

1865, June 12: Title transferred to John Blakely by Francis Stoddard

 

1869: Edith Allie Blakely married Edgar O. Van Houten, son of Isaac W. Van Houten of 3205 Race St.

            In Nov. 1870, they were enumerated with their newborn son, Blakely Van Houten at 300 N. 38th St.  They lived here for a few years (see below).  In 1880, they lived at 3305 Hamilton St.

            John Blakely was born in Dewsbury Yorkshire England in 1830.  He arrived in Philadelphia in 1843 at age 14.  The 1860 census shows they had four children who are not listed here: three older children, Hannah A. (12), Emma [Edith] A. (11), and Rebecca J. (8), and a young child, Frank H. (1).

 

1872 Directory: Edgar A. [sic.] Van Houten, clerk at 233 S, 4th St.

            He was married to E. Allie Blakely.  In 1875, he purchased 3305 Hamilton St.

            In 1880, they lived at 700 Preston St.  Gideon was a bookkeeper.

1895: Death of Maria Smitherman, 77 years old, wife of Edward W. Smitherman. Funeral services at the residence of her son, 3510 Hamilton St.

 

1898 Blue Book: Mr. and Mrs. G. T. Smitheman, summer residence: Bryn Mawr, Pa.  Receiving day Tuesday.

 

1899, October: “Contractor Thomas C. Sloan has secured permits for… interior alterations at 3510 Hamilton street.” (Phila. Inquirer, Oct. 16, 1899)

1903, Dec. 27: Death of Edward Wright Smitheman, 87 years old, of 3508 Hamilton St.

            “Edward W. Smithson Dead

            “Edward W. Smitheman died at his residence, 3510 Hamilton street, at the age of 87 years.  He was a native of Darby, England, and settled in West Philadelphia at the age of 37.  He was a long time in the Customs House, under President Buchanan, and was associated with John B. Gough as a temperance advocate.”  (Phila. Inquirer, Dec. 30, 1903)

 

1904, Aug. 7: Death of Katherine Smitheman, 5 years old, daughter of Gideon T. and Maggie V. Smitheman of 3510 Hamilton St. at Ocean City, N.J. from valvular heart disease.

 

1904, Oct.: “Rev. George Hancock, the aged Methodist clergyman, died on Monday at his home, 1728 North Sydenham street, as a result of diseases, will be buried to-morrow afternoon from the residence of his nephew, Gideon Smitheman, 3510 Hamilton street….”  (Phila. Inquirer, Oct. 12, 1904)

 

1905, Nov. 16: Marriage of Margaret V. Smitheman to Thomas O. Peirce

            He and his younger brother lived with several of theor aunts and uncles at 3323 Powelton Ave.  Their parents, Joshua and Mary (Thomas) Peirce, lived in Tacoma Washington.

 

1908, Oct. 28: Title transferred to Charles Girvin by Maggie Smitheman

 

1909, Aug. 22, Philadelphia Inquirer: “WEST PHILADELPHIA, 3510 HAMILTON ST. furnished or unfurnished apartments,.  3 large, communicating rooms, bath; ‘phone; every convenience; ideal for couple of gents.”

            Harriet M. Girvin died Jan. 12, 1921.  They were living at 659 N. 3rd St.  Services and internment were in Strasburg, Pa.  When Charles Girvin died, the deed was transferred to his son, Robert.

            Wilhelmi was previously married to Katherine Dorothy Fick.  In 1990, Mary and Henry lived at 522 N. 59th St.

 

1913, April 4, Philadelphia Inquirer: “P. H. Clemens has filed plans for a four-story flat house, 48 by 90 feet, at 3510 Hamilton street, for Charles Gervin.”

 

1913, July 1913 Philadelphia Inquirer: “ELECTRICIAN’S HELPHER.  Call between 7:30 and 8 A. M., with tools 3510 Hamilton.”

            Percy G. Hayden was the son of Arthur L. Hayden and Mary Elizabeth Auld. In 1880, they lived in Malden, Mass.  In 1910, Percy and Sara Hayden they lived in Wilmington, Del.  She had been married twice, he was in his first marriage.  They had had 3 children, but only one was surviving.  He was listed as “P. Sauld [Auld?] Hayden” and her middle initial was given as H.  In 1930, Percy G. and Sara R. Hayden lived in Melrose, Mass.
