The History of the Building

 

3704-3718: “three-story Italianate doubles, with bracketed flat overhanging roof, stuccoed; side projecting bays (3706 shingled second floor addition, Circa 1920)…. 3716 - Circa 1920 second-floor addition; porch altered.”

These houses are not indicated on the 1862 Smedley Atlas the drawings for which were completed in 1860.

1862 Directory: John W. Boyd, banker at 40 S. 3rd St.

 

1863, January 14: 3716 & 3718 were surveyed for insurance by The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire policy #10664. They were owned by William P. Hamm. He lived at 206 N. 35th St.

 

 

1866 Directory: G. E. Boyd, banker, G. E. Boyd & Co. (G. E. Boyd & Wm. Flanner) 46 S. 3rd

1870, Apr. 9: Title transferred to Michael Riley by William P. Hamm

 

1871:  Resurveyed for insurance by The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire. It was owned by Michael Riley.

 

1872 Directory: Charles E. Pugh, agent [for Penna. Railroad] at 3003 Market St.

                         Elijah Pugh, coal merchant at 3807 Market St.

 

1873 Directory: Charles E, Pugh, clerk at corner of 31st & Market

                         Elijah Pugh, coal at 3807 Market St.

                         Elijah, Jr. Pugh, clerk

            In 1874, Charles purchased 3501 Baring St. and the whole family moved there.

 

1876 & 1877 Directories: J. Roberts Foulke, clerk

            The 1875 directory listed his address as 737 Spruce St. In 1877, he moved to 3403 Hamilton St. (See his biography there.)

 

1878 Directory: Albert Hancock, Charles A. Dixon & Co.

                         George W. Hancock, engineer at corner of Lancaster Ave. and 40th St.

                        They were the sons of Joseph L. and Susan P. Hancock. They previously lived at 327 (later 405) N. 33rd St. George later lived at 3216 Baring St.

            Albert was the son of Joseph Lee Hancock and Susan Pryor Bacon. In 1870, they lived at 405 N. 33rd. Josephine was the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Keeley of 325 N. 32nd St.

1885-1894 Directories: Miss Sadie E. Billman.

 

1895, April 30: Permit issued to “George W. Gardner, Jr., one-story brick kitchen, 14x14, at 3716 Baring street.” (Inquirer)

1900:

Harry M. League          27        Stenographer; father born in MD; renter

Minnie League             29        Married 2 years, one child

Mary R. League            10 months

Ella Wardell                 35        Servant

            Harry Mortimer League and Minnie Roberts were married in New York City, Feb. 9, 1898. In 1880, Harry lived at 3706 Hamilton. In 1920, they lived at 3726 Baring.

 

1900: Mrs. M. E. League. Presbyterian Hosp. (Cornell & Shober’s directory of trained nurses.)

 

1906: Mary B. Niles. Member: (Handbook of Am. Academy of Political and Social Science.)

 

1909, Jan. 7: Title transferred to The Real Estate Title & Trust Co. by Michael Riley

            Michael Riley died Dec. 22, 1907. He lived at 3702 Baring St.

 

1910:

John M. Young            33        Coal salesman; father born in Ireland; owner, with a mortgage

Laura M. Young           32        Married 5 years, 2 children, 1 surviving

Anthony G. Felix         25        Brother-in-law; discount [?] clerk in a bank

Minnie Jacobe              18        Servant; black; born in Va.

            Laura M. League married John M. Young in 1905. She was the daughter of Harry C. League and grew up at 3706 Hamilton St. and in this house.

            Anna Mable Young and Anthony G. Felix’s marriage was registered in Philadelphia in 1908.

 

1915: John Young, Jr. age 4. He was sent out to buy curtain poles, got sidetracked and wandered two miles from home with another four year old boy. Story ends happily, the children found by policeman and returned home-no curtain poles. (for full story: Oswego Semi-weekly Palladium, 3/30/1915 pg.2)

1919, Dec. 5: Title transferred to Benjamin Stambler by The Real Estate Title & Trust Co.

            It was immediately transferred to Anthony G. Felix.

            Margaret was the widow of John Frederick Flynn who died in 1913. They lived at 769 N. 37th St. They were married in Philadelphia in 1893. He was a blacksmith.

 

1932: Marriage license issued to Josephine A. Schwer and Charles J. Flynn

 

1940:

1942, Mar. 14: Death of Margaret C. Flynn, née Maloney, wife of the late John F. Flynn of 3716 Baring St. Solemn Requiem Mass at St. Agatha's Church

 

1942 Draft Registration: J. Flynn Charles self-employed selling church goods

            He was born Jan. 19, 1984 in Pennsylvania.

 

1944, Jan. 27: Title transferred to Charles J. Flynn and Josephine, his wife by Charles J. Flynn

 

1945, Sep. 28: Death of Charles J. Flynn, 51 years old, of 3716 Baring St. Solemn Requiem Mass at St. Agatha's Church Internment at Cathedral Cemetery. He was born in Philadelphia.
