Previous Residents

 

1872 Directory: Henry C. League, clerk at 3101 Market St.

            Harry Carr League married Mary Riley about this time. Mary was the daughter of Michael and Mary Allen. In 1870, they all lived next door at 3702 Hamilton St.  They remained in the neighborhood until the late 1890s when Henry was committed to the Home for the Incurables at 48th and Woodland. He died at his son’s house, 3726 Hamilton St., in 1912.

 

1874, Philadelphia Inquirer: “Michael Bradley [sic.], Chauncey F. Sargent, and Harry C. League, who keep a tavern and news agency at No. 3702 Hamilton street, were charged with selling liquor on Sunday. The charge was brought by Joseph Flager, who was employed by the accused to attend to their eating bar. He saw the liquor sold and he heard League order the bar-keep to sell it. The accused were each held in $800 bail for trial.” (April 15, 1874)

            Henry Mortimer League married Minnie Roberts in New York City, Feb. 9, 1898. In 1910, they lived at 3716 Baring St. In 1920, they lived at 3726 Baring.

            In 1900, after the death of their mother, Laura and Caroline were living with their aunt and uncle, John L. and Laura (Riley) Kates at 217 N. 34th St. Laura M. League married John M. Young in 1905. In 1910, The Youngs replaced her brother and sister-in-law at 3716 Baring St.

 

1881, May: Birth of George Slater League

            He died in Aug., 1890 at age 9 years.

 

1883 Directory: Henry C. League, confectionary agent 1435 Market St. & 38 N. Merick

            The 1887 directory lists him at 3716 Baring St., his son’s house.

            Ann Jane (O’Neil) Colladay was the widow of William Y. Colladay. They were marred at Grace Church (Episcopal) on Jan. 18, 1848. In 1880, they lived at 1329 N. Broad St. He was a notions dealer. The 1887 lists William Y. and Harry C. Colladay at 3321 Powelton Ave. The 1890 directory lists them at 661 N. 32nd St. William died there in April 1893.

1903, Jan. 18: Death of Ann Jane Colladay, 76 years old, of 3706 Hamilton St., wife of the late William Y. Calladay. Burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

            In 1908, Rev. Boggs lived at 3715 Baring St.

            Rev. Boggs and the Colladay sisters moved to 3414 Hamilton St. which Rev. Boggs purchased in 1920. The three Colladay sisters worked as his housekeeper and servants. Rev. Boggs and Anna Colladay were still living there in 1940. He died while living there in 1949.

            In 1920, Ellsworth Jones and his wife, Ella B., lived at 2514 N. 2nd St. They had two daughters ages 23 and 20. Sheldon was 2 years, 8 months old. Ellsworth stated his parents were born in Wales. He was the owner of a paint store.
