The History of the Building

 

302-304 N. 35th St. were designed and built by Wilson Brothers & Co. They were torn down about 1960 for the playground of the Samuel Powel Elementary School.

            David Mitchell Murphy was born in 1840 in Camus, County Tyrone, Ulster Northern Ireland. He married Sarah Jane Whittem in 1871 In Albany, N.Y. She was born in Meriden, Warwickshire, England in 1842. They both died in Pasadena, Calif.: he in 1892 and she in 1894.

                        Edward G. Keen, commercial merchant at 202 Walnut

            Edward Keen was George Morris’s son-in-law. The 1881 directory and the 1880 census list all three at 3616 Baring St.

1894 & ‘95 Directories: Rev. Solomon M. Cooper

            He was married to Elizabeth Dixon. They had a daughter, Mary H. (1848-1908), who married Levin J. Clogg. In 1890, the Cloggs lived at 609 N. 32nd St.

 

1898 Directory: Thomas Garrigues

            In 1890, he lived at 123 N 33rd.

            The rest of Mary Hick’s family was listed next door at 302 N. 35th St.

            Susan Cole was Jessie D. Ellis’s grandmother. In 1880, they lived with Jessie’s parents at 3200 Baring St.

            Susan Cole was the widow of Edward Cole. She died in 1905 when she was living at 3501 Hamilton St.

            Harriett B. Lavarelle was living at 3701 Powelton Ave. in 1910 and 1920.

            In 1880, a Mary G. Smith was working as a servant at 52 School Lane.

 

1906 Blue Book: Mrs. Rebecca A. McKinstry

                                    [Her husband, Andrew McKinstry, was listed at 3321 Hamilton St. in 1890-’91. When he died December 21, 1894, he was living at 3707 Hamilton St. where his wife and daughter were enumerated in 1900.]

1907, Jan. 31: Death of Rebecca A. McKinstry of 304 N. 34th St. from arterial sclerosis; burial in New Platz, N.Y.

 

1907, May 7: Death of James S. Freeland of 304 N. 35th St. Funeral at his late residence.

            In 1900, he lived at 3403 Hamilton St. with his wife, Francis.

 

1910, Jan. 24: Death of Mary Askew Hicks, 91 years old, of 304 N. 35th St.

 

1910: Enumerated together with 302 N. 35th St.

 

1913, Dec. 15: Marriage license issued to Mary T. Janney of 3412 Hamilton St. and Spencer L. Coxe of 304 N. 35th St.

 

1920:

Elizabeth Hiltner         52        Widowed; born in Philadelphia, father born in Ireland, mother in the U.S.; renting

Robert S. Hiltner         24        Supervisor in printing office; born in Philadelphia as were both parents

            Robert married in about 1925 and in 1930, they were all living at 3416 Powelton Ave. In 1940, Robert and his wife, Madeline, were living at 3416 Hamilton St.

 

c1922: “Rebecca C. Weingardner (494), eldest daughter of Abraham A. and Margaret (Williams) Weingardner, born at Williamsport, Pa., April 7, 1849; married there March 10, 1868, Hugh Louis Trimble, of that city. He was born at Baltimore, Maryland, August 13, 1845, and was a son of Samuel and Mary (Flanagan) Trimble. Hugh Louis Trimble and his wife lived in Williamsport, Pa., until March 19, 1884, when they removed to Philadelphia, where he is solicitor for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, residing at 304 N. 35th St.”

n.d.: Powelton Post, Jan 1964: “Luella Parker and her daughter Sarah lived at 35th & Pearl for 24 years.”

            Sarah was profiled in the Powelton Post, April, 1961.
