The History of the Building

 

3704-3718: “three-story Italianate doubles, with bracketed flat overhanging roof, stuccoed; side projecting bays… 3718 - porch altered.”

These houses are not indicated on the 1862 Smedley Atlas the drawings for which were completed in 1860.

1862 Directory: William B. Minster, salesman at 504 Market St.

 

1863, January 14: 3716 & 3718 were surveyed for insurance by The Philadelphia Contributionship for the Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire policy #10664. They were owned by William P. Hamm. He lived at 206 N. 35th St.

 

 

1863, Civil War Draft Registration: William B. Minster, 36, salesman, born in Pennsylvania

 

1866 Directory: William B. Minster, salesman at 504 Market St.

            The 1867 directory and 1870 census list him and his family at 3700 Baring St.

            Henry C. Phillips was a photographer. In 1880 and 1900, they lived at 3210 Baring St.

 

1873 & 1874 Directories: Max Riebenack, assistant auditor at 233 S. 4th St.(Pennsylvania Railroad)

            The 1875 and 1878 directories list him at 3829 Baring St. The 1880 census lists him and his family at 3701 Powelton Ave. He then built the large mansion at 34th and Powelton where they lived after about 1890. (See his biography at that address.)

            In 1880, he and his wife Edith lived at 429 N. 33rd St. In 1900, they were at 3201 Baring St. He worked for the Geological Survey.

            In 1910, she lived at 3517 Hamilton St. In 1920 and 1930, she was at 3619 Baring St. (See biographical notes there.)

                        Sarah M. Hergesheimier, widow of Alfred.

                                    The 1896 and 1901 directories listed her at 116 W Hortter, Germantown. She died July 18, 1903 when she was living at 3517 Hamilton St. (Note: there was another Sarah M. Hergesheimier, wife of James B., in Philadelphia.)

            Lee J. Fort married Esther Mahn Terry in Philadelphia in 1893. In 1900, they lived at 1505 Morris St. and in 1920, they lived next door at 3720 Baring St.

            Willard Biddle Gilman Terry was born in Princeton, N.J.

 

1911 Directory: Lee J. Fort, insurance at 415 Walnut St.

 

1911, Mar. 15: Death of John J. Mahn [Jr.]

            He was the son of John J. Mahn, Sr. and Esther Look. His father was born in Holland and his mother in Maryland.

 

1911: David John Terry. Class of 1910. Divinity. (Directory of Living Alumni of Princeton University.)

            In 1920, he and his wife Bertha S. Terry were living in Ben Avon, Allegheny, Pa. with their two young children: Elizabeth and Jane. He was working as a social worker with a service organization.

 

1912, Dec. 10: Marriage license issued to Eva L. Ayres of 3302 Baring St. and Dr. Willard B. G. Terry of 3718 Baring St.

            They moved to 727 S. 60th St. where he had his medical office. In 1910, she lived with her mother and siblings at 3234 Powelton Ave.

 

1920:

James Baker                 58        Brother; insurance agent; single; born in Delaware

            In 1910, Marcus and Florence lived at 1523 N. 55th St. They had been married one year. He was a retail shoe dealer.

            In 1920, they lived at 5620 Market St. She was a seamstress and dress maker. She was the widow of John Grier, a tailor. They had no children.

1958, May 24: “Fannie Mae Pompey, 3718 Baring St., died at Graduate Hospital on May 12.... Remains were shipped to Mobile, Ala., for burial. Husband Jerry survives.”

1968: Sold by Austin Wattles to Ralph and Carol Flood.

The Wattles family added bathrooms and turned the kitchen/back shed into one large room with a passageway for laundry, a powder room and an open entrance into the cellar.

            The Floods turned the front parlor and dining room into one large room, reopened the old back hearth into a fireplace and enclosed/landscaped the back yard.
