The History of the Building

 

3701-19: “two-and-one-half story Second Empire style doubles; stone facade over brick. First-floor Victorian porches; some altered-(3703, 3705-07, 3709, 3719); four registers, slate- shingled mansard (3701, 3705-07, 3709 asphalt); slightly arched dormer windowheads. All built by the same developer.”

Previous Residents

 

1879, July 30: Death of William D. W. Bennett, 29 years old, of 3703 Hamilton St. He was single and a lawyer. He was buried at Woodlands Cemetery. His parents and siblings lived at 3410 Race St. In 1870, they lived at 3519 Hamilton St.

            Levi Fouse and his family later lived at 3613 Baring St. (See his bio there.)  He worked for Fidelity Mutual Life Association and became its president.

 

1886, October: Deed transferred from Isaac & Caroline E. (wife) Hazlehurst to Sarah P. Singer.

 

1900:

            John Tilchean Blake and Charlotte Elizabeth Bowers were married in Philadelphia on July 23, 1890. In 1900, they lived at 3627 Wallace St. John Blake died in 1917 while living at 3701 Powelton Ave.

 

1918 Draft Registration: Nelson Darker Hunt born Dec. 14, 1874, supervising auditor for General Accident Fire & Life Assurance Corp., 421 Walnut St.; married to Lizzie Kate Hunt.

 

1920:

Irene Hunt                   42        Sister; single

            In 1880, Nelson (age 5) was living with his parents and his maternal grandparents at 19 S. 38th St. His grandfather, William Darker (56) was a wire maker born in England. His grandmother was of Scottish descent. His father, George W. Hunt (31) was a bookkeeper born in N.H. (or Maine). His mother was Martha Lees. George brother, Alfred D. Hunt (20) also lived with them. Alfred later lived at 318 N. 37th St. In 1900, William Darker was deceased. Nelson still lived at 19 N. 38th St. with his parents, his grandmother, and his uncle, Alfred Hunt, a salesman. Nelson (age 25) was listed as a student.

 

1920, Mar. 8: Death of George W. Hunt, 70 years old, burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery

            His wife, Emma H. (Darker) Hunt died in 1915 when they were living at 3510 Lancaster Ave. She was 64.

1952, Aug. 5: Death of Lizzie K. (Webb) Hunt, 81 years old, of 3703 Hamilton St. She died at Norristown State Hospital of pulmonary tuberculosis

 

1996, July: purchased by current owners, Jamal and Patricia J. Hampton
