The History of the Building

 

3417-3419: “Second Empire-style, two-and-one-half story, six register double at the corner of Baring and North 35th Streets. This building is wider than most others on the street; the original porch extends across this width and along the sides. All first and second floor openings have arched stone lintels. Wood cornice with decorative scrolls. Original s late mansard sheathed with asphalt shingles. Dormers have chalet-style detail across gables.”

1860, July: Deed for 3413-17 Baring St. and 3412-22 Hamilton St. transferred from Samuel Hutchinson (for Sheriff sale) to Estate of Robert Steen (deceased).

 

1877, Jan. 2: Title for 3413-3419 Baring St. transferred to John F. Craig and William J. McCahan by Estate of Robert Steen

 

1877, July 2: William J. McCahan buys out John F. Craig’s share in exchange for his share of 3417 Baring St.

 

1878 Directory (Fall, 1877): William J. McCahan of W. J. McCahan & Co. (William J. and Jonathan McCahan, Thomas Cooper and Charles Toelpe), sugar refiners at 147 Front St.

            The 1877 Directory and 1870 census list him at 334 N. 32nd St.

1892: William J. McCahan joined a law suit aimed at stopping the introduction of electric trolleys on Baring St. to replace the old horse-drawn streetcars.  (See the Powelton History Blog for details.)

 

1896, July 16: Death of Annie Ralston Hurlock, 32 years old, of 3419 Baring St.  She was single.  Burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.  (Phila. Death Index)

 

1898 Blue Book: Thomas C. McCahan, W. J. McCahan and W. J. McCaha, Jr. were members of the Powelton Club. (For a brief history of the club, see the Powelton History Blog.)

 

1898, June 8: Marriage of Florence May Phillips (3604 Powelton Ave.) to Thomas C. McCahan (3419 Baring St.).  The marriage was performed at 3604 Powelton Ave. (Records of the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets).  She was the daughter of Thomas E. Phillips and Mary E. Potts who lived at 3701 Powelton Ave.

            The 1894 and 1897 directories list him as a clerk living at 1344 Spring Garden St.

 

1909, Feb. 13: Death of a female infant daughter of Elmer E. Rodenbough of 3419 Baring St.  Burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.  (Phila. Death Index)

 

1910: Elmer E. Rodenbough. Elected to membership in Art Club of Philadelphia. (Charter, etc. of same. 1913.)

1913:

“1st The name of the proposed corporation is "The W. J. McCahan Sugar Refining Company."

2nd. Said corporation is formed for the purpose of the refining and manufacture of sugar and the purchase of raw materials for said purposes.

3d. The business of said corporation is to be transacted in the City of Philadelphia, with an office at No. 147 So. Front Street in said City.

4th. Said corporation is to exist perpetually. The names and residences of the subscribers and the number of shares subscribed by each, are as follows:

1913 Members Art Club of Phila.: “Rodenbough, Elmer E.[Elected:] 1910, 3419 Baring St.”

(Charter, constitution and by-laws of the Art Club of Philadelphia with house rules, report of the Board of Directors and list of members. 1913)

 

1914, June 19: Death of Margaret J. McCahan, daughter of William J. and the late Sarah C. McCahan.  Funeral services at her late residence, 3419 Baring St.

 

1918, March 9: Death of William J. McCahan, 86 years old, of 3419 Baring St.

            Elizabeth McCahan Rodenbough died Oct. 15, 1921.  They were living at Mill Creek and Valley Roads, Ardmore.

            Howard Leslie Fry and Gertrude Kimber Warrin married at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Germantown on June 4, 1913.  They apparently lived for a while in the home of Dr. Samuel Skillern, 3509 Baring St.

            Lille Kimber Warrin died in 1924.

            Howard Fry’s father, Warren Henry Fry, died in 1941 while living at 3621 Powelton Ave.

 

1924, Mar. 22: Want Ad: “COOK: white girl, to do cooking & downstairs work, sleep in. 3419 Baring St.”
