History

 

1866, Oct. 9: Transfer of 3405-3411 Baring St. and 3404-3410 Hamilton St. from Gerardus A. Haines to Alexander J. Andrews

 

1869, Apr. 9: Transfer 3405-3407 Baring St. and 3404-3406 Hamilton St. from Alexander J. Andrews and wife to Robert Glendenning, Jr. trustee.

            Alexander and Amelia Andrews lived at 3507 Baring St.

 

1870:

Charlotte Boyd [Smith] 34       No real estate (renting); personal property: $3,000

            Charlotte was the widow of John H. Smith (born about 1825) who was born in Del. In 1860, they were living in Ward 18 South West Division. John was a sail maker and manufacturer, and Charlotte kept a confectionary store. Martha was 10 and Charles was 7. John died in Feb. 1866 from a “lingering illness.”  They lived with John and Mary Boyd (ages 53 and 45) who were probably Charlotte’s parents. He was a stone cutter. Also in the household were William, Martha and Josephine Boyd, probably Charlotte’s siblings. William was a sail maker and Martha was a dress maker.

            In 1880, John Jr. was a boarder at 807 Taylor St working as a carpenter.

            Charles married Florence Truitt. In 1920, they lived at 3604 Powelton Ave.

 

1870, April: Deed transferred from John Doyle to William H. List.

            John Doyle was born in Ireland about 1835. In 1870, he and his family were living on Vine St. He was a builder with real estate holdings worth $100,000 and personal property worth $2,500. By 1880, they had moved to 3421 Race St. where they lived until 1893. In 1880, he described himself as a builder, but in the 1881 directory he lists his business as carpet cleaning. In the 1887 directory and later directories, he listed his business as storage.

            The 1873 directory lists him next door at 3404.

 

1875, Feb. 16: William H. List was elected Police Magistrate

 

1878, June: Deed transferred from William H. List to George W. Kendrick.

            Mrs. George W. Kendrick, Minnie Murdoch Kendrick, was the cousin of Ella Murdoch List (see the Powelton History Blog). The Kendrick family lived next door at 3404 Hamilton St.

            The 1866 Directory lists Edward Murdoch, bookbinder, 632 Tasker St. which is in Queen Village. In 1870, the Murdochs and the William List family were living together in North Philadelphia. William was a conveyancer. His parents were John and Jane List. John was a jeweler. In 1856, when William was 10, they lived at 113 Lombard St.

 

1884: Charles M. List, secretary of the St. Nicholas Agassiz Assoc., West Philadelphia Chapter #539 (with 23 members)

            An earlier West Philadelphia chapter was founded by Minnie Murdoch Kendrick, Charles List’s mother’s cousin, in the mid-1870s.

 

1885, Aug. 25: Death of Elliot Harlan List

            “Magistrate William H. List has sustained the sad affliction of a death in his family. His youngest son, Elliot Harlan List, a very bright and promising child of thirteen years, died on Tuesday evening of congestion of the brain, resulting from a severe attack of fever, with which he was taken last Sunday. The little boy possessed talents of more than usual promise, and an intellect wonderfully bright for his age. On Saturday he caught a severe cold, followed on Sunday by a high fever. On Tuesday he gave signs of recovery, but a sudden and remarkable change set in towards evening, due to congestion, and at seven o’clock he died. The family are plunged into the deepest sorrow over their bereavement.”   (Phila. Inquirer, Aug 28)

1891, Nov. 1: “An Old Man’s Fatal Fall. Edward Murdoch, 70 years old, of 3406 Hamilton street, fell down stairs at his residence yesterday and sustained injuries that caused his death shortly afterwards.” (Phila. Inquirer, Nov. 2, 1891)

 

1892, Sept. 27: “A Double Wedding. Invitations have been received in this city to a double wedding which will take place in Northminster Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, at six o’clock Sunday, September 27. Robert E. Forster, son of ex-Insurance Commissioner Forster, of this city, and Mark Hollingshead, jr., will be the grooms. The brides will be Ella and Cecilia List, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. William List, of Philadelphia.”  (Phila. Inquirer, Sept. 17)

            In 1900 and 1910, Robert and Ella Forster lived at 313 N. 34th St.

1898, Sept. 6: “The wedding of Miss Jennie Noel List, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William H. List, to Mr. William P. Young, took place last evening at the Northminster Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Dr. Cochran [3302 Baring St.] officiating. Miss Grace Ringwalt [3409 Hamilton St.] was maid of honor and Miss Kate Andrews [3416 Hamilton St.], Miss Florence Smedley and Miss Edith List [3406 Hamilton St.] were the bridesmaids. Mr. William Adams was best man, and Messrs. George W. Kendrick, 3d [3507 Baring St.], W. M. Mitchell and Mr. Murdoch Kendrick [3507 Baring St.] were the ushers. A reception followed at the residence of the bride’s parents, 3406 Hamilton street. After the wedding trip the bride and groom will reside on Baring street, near Saunders avenue.” (Phila.             Who’s Who on the Pacific Coast, 1913: “Young, William P., Consul, and Steamship and Tourist Agent; born, York, Pa., July 13, 1873; son, William P. and Sarah (Thatcher) Y. Edu.: York, Pa. at York Collegiate Institute. Married Jennie List, Sept. 6, 1898, at Philadelphia, Pa. Owner W. P. Young Steamship Agency; Manager, Yucatan Tours Bureau; American Vice and Deputy Consul at Progresso, Mexico. Address: Progresso, Yucatan, Mexico.”

 

1899: Charles M. List married Katharine L. Kelly. (Kelly may have been the name of her adopted father. She is also listed as Catherine K. Lamb.)

 

1899, July 20: Marriage license issued to Nellie T. Light and William H. List, Jr. of 3406 Hamilton St.

            In 1910, Leonardo lived at 3301 Hamilton. In 1920, he was at 209 N. 35th and in 1930, he lived at 3605 Hamilton.

            Edith Murdoch married Dr. Sidney Alexander Chalfont of Pittsburgh. They had one daughter, Evaline, who was attending school in Pittsburgh in 1922. Edith is buried in Churchville, PA. in the Beulah Presbyterian Church cemetery.

 

1901, November: Deed transferred from George W. Kendrick Jr. to Ella M. List.

 

1903: “Chairman John M. Campbell announced that George W. Kendrick, Jr., [3404 Hamilton St. and 3507 Baring St.] had founded a free scholarship in Bryn Mawr College in memory of his wife, Minnie Murdoch Kendrick, for many years President of the Alumnae of the Girls' High and Normal Schools. This scholarship will be open to graduates of the two higher schools for girls. The only name submitted was that of Minnie K. List, and she was unanimously chosen to the scholarship. Minnie Murdoch lived at 3507 Baring St.”

(“Scholarships were awarded yesterday by the Committee on Scholarships of the Board of Public Education among the graduates of the Central High School, Girls' High School and Normal School.”  The North American, 8/30/1903)

 

1903-’07: Minnie Kendrick List, undergraduate student at Bryn Mawr  College,  Dept. of Education. She was prepared by Girl’s High School, Phila. “Bryn Mawr Program” yearly programs list her. She was the first recipient of a scholarship at Bryn Mawr that was founded by George W. Kendrick, Jr. in honor of his wife, Minnie Murdoch Kendrick.

 

1904, April 12: Death of Jane Murdoch, 82 years, of 3406 Hamilton St.

            She was the widow of Edward Murdoch who died in 1891 (see above).

            Frederick Chalfant was a civil engineer. Minnie & Frederick lived in Pittsburgh.

 

1911: Amelia W. Robinson; member of the national society of Daughters of the American Revolution

 

1912, May 6: Edward Murdoch List married Nan M. McGraw in Wilmington, Delaware. He was a mechanical engineer. In 1920, they lived in Hamilton, Mercer Co., New Jersey. He was an automobile salesman.

1945: Ad “Hamilton 3406 – Hamilton House. Rm. & brd. for pensioners. $35 mo. Up.” (Inquirer, Jan. 4)

            Similar ads appeared regularly An ad in February 1946 notes oil heat and $40 per month. In September 1947 it notes it is under new management, it offers “Good food” and it’s now $40-$45.
