“Members of several prominent Jamaica families are preparing to go to Philadelphia to-morrow to attend the wedding of Asa S. Wing, President and one of the largest stockholders of the Provident Life and Trust Company of Philadelphia to Mrs. Elizabeth Wood, widow of Joseph R. Wood, formerly a well-known druggist. The wedding is to be performed in one of the Quaker meeting houses.

“Mr. Wing is 60 years old, while the bride-to-be is 37 years. He was a cousin of the bride's first husband. Mr. Wood died in 1911 in a Massachusetts town, where he had gone in search of health, and his death left his wife in straitened circumstances with four children to look after, a boy, 14 years old, and three girls, 10, 8, and 6 years old. Shortly after his death, to add to Mrs. Wood’s troubles, one of the girls developed eye trouble, and it was feared she would become blind.

“Finding herself without means and a family to care for, Mrs. Wood started out to make a living for them, but she was having a hard time when she was visited by Mr. Wing. He suggested to her that as he was a widower and had a big home it would be perfectly agreeable to him to have her come and look after his home and also said that the children would find accommodations in his home. She accepted, and some months later a proposal of marriage followed.”  (Nov. 25, 1912)
