3416 Hamilton Street

 

 

3412-22: “two-and-one-half story brick doubles. Pressed corbelled brick detail…. 3416-18 has no porch, but a circa 1950 pent eave. Each house has shingled gable in mansard roof. Architect: G.W. and W.D. Hewitt.”

3412-3422 Hamilton were built by John Shedwick. He and his sons built many homes in Powelton. They lived at 3408 Race St.

 

History

 

1860, July: Deed transferred from Samuel Hutchinson to Robert Steen (Sheriff sale).

 

1882, December: Deed transferred from John G. Steen, et al., Executors of Robert Steen to John Shedwick.

            This transfer included 3412-3422 Hamilton St.

 

1884, Jan. 23: Title transferred to Kate J. Andrews by John Shedwick

 

1885 Directory (Fall, 1884): Blythe C. Andrews, tailor at 702 Chestnut.

            The 1884 directory lists him at 36 N. 11th St. In 1880, they lived at 1403 Cumberland Ave. They had three daughters and a ten-month old son, Blythe P. He died in 1881 at age 2 years.

1907, Oct. 2: Death of Kate J. Andrews, wife of Blythe C. Andrews.

            In 1910, Kate Blythe, Emily, Katherine, and Charles Ross were living at 1592 52nd St.

            Blythe C. Andrews died Jan. 23, 1917. He was living at 1592 N. 52nd St.

 

1910, April 6: 3416 Hamilton St. offered for rent at $50 per month. (Inquirer)

 

1910, May 5: Sold to Carl W. Kimpton by the Powelton Building Association for $7,300. (Inquirer, May 7, 1910)

            The 1910 census in April listed him at 3713 Hamilton St.

 

1912, Feb. 16: Death of Carl W. Kimpton. Relatives, friends, also Business Sciences Club and the Canadian Society invited to services at 3418 [sic.] Hamilton St.

 

1912, May 16: Sold to Ada V. Compton by Alice R. Kimpton for $7,250. (Inquirer, May 23, 1912)

 

1920:

Samuel D-H. Compton 58       Manager in clothing store; born in N.Y.; owner, free of a mortgage

Ada V. Compton         58        Born in N.Y., father born in N.J., mother n N.Y.

            They did not have any children.

 

1928, Mar. 27: Death of Samuel De Haas Comtpon, 66 years old. He was born in New York City.

 

1930:

Ada V. Compton         68        Widowed; born in N.Y., father born in N.J., mother in N.Y.; owner, house valued at $12,000

 

1932, Jan. 15: Death of Ada V. Compton (nee Powers), 70 years old, of 3416 Hamilton St. She was born in New York City.

            Her estate, valued at $20,000, was to be divided between her two nieces. (Inquirer, Jan. 27, 1932)

 

1931, June 1: Death of Victor Sanderson of 3416 Hamilton St.; burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery

            In 1920 and 1930, he lived with the family of Calvin and Elizabeth Hiltner and their son Robert (see below).

 

1937, Dec. 2: Death of Elizabeth Hiltner, 72 years old, of 3416 Hamilton St.; burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery

 

1940:

Robert Hiltner             45        Pressman at publishing co; 8 years of school; renting for $40 per month

Madeline Hiltner          45        First married at age 18, married previously, 3 children; parents born in England; 8 years of school

            They also lived here in 1935. Robert was the son of Elizabeth D. Hiltner. In 1920, Robert was living with his mother at 304 N. 35th St. In 1930, they lived with her at 3416 Powelton Ave. In the 1930 census, they stated that they married at age 31. They did not have any children living with them. In 1940, Robert’s sister, Elizabeth Effen, was living with his husband and five children at 3602 Powelton Ave.

 

1942 Draft Registration: Robert Lee Hiltner employed by Curtis Publishing Co.

            He was also employed by Curtis when he registered for the draft in 1918.

 

Bill and Sophelia Ridgeway lived at this address. Their scrapbooks are available here.

            In 1930, William D. Ridgeway was 28 and living as a roomer at 801 S. 31st St. The 1920 census states he was born in Virginia but the 1930 census states Louisiana.

 

1949:Ridgway Cleared of Disloyalty by Post Office Board

            “William D. Ridgway, of 3416 Hamilton St., veteran Post Office employee, has been cleared of charges of disloyalty against the government.

            “Ridgway was suspended Feb. 1 following notification that past associations with the National Negro Congress had made him a suspect.

            “He appealed the suspension. Following an appearance in Washington he was heard by a review board Sept. 20 at the Customs House 2nd and Chestnut Sts.

            “His case was presented by Julius M. Kirch of Local 89, Federation of Postal Clerks. Seven days later he was notified that the board held the charges unfounded and that the Post Office Department had been so notified.

            “Ridgway will begin his 30th year in the Post Office on Oct. 12. He is stationed at 30th Street Post Office.

            “The clerk, well known in civic circles, is married. He is vice president of the Mutual Association of Postal Employees, which has its headquarters at 3942 Brown St.

            “He is the first of six local men, most of them Negroes, who have been suspended on charges brought under Executive Order 9835.”  (Philadelphia Tribune, Oct. 4, 1949)

 

1957: William Ridgeway retired from Postal Service

 

1960-‘63: William Ridgeway served as a Field Investigator I, in the Bureau of Professional Licensing, Law Enforcement Division, Dept. of Public Instruction, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

 

1960, Nov.: 3416 Hamilton St. was the polling place for Ward 24, Div. 1

            Voting took place here during several elections in the 1960s.

 

1963-‘66: Bill Ridgeway was active in the Powelton Neighbors Association including serving as treasurer.

 

1965: William Ridgeway became a member of the Board of Directors of the Bureau of Child Care.

 

1965-‘67: William Ridgeway was on the staff of the City Treasurer
