“Grey Gables”

 

312-314 N. 33rd St., a double, was replaced by the Grey Gables in 1911.

 

“four-story Colonial Revival-style apartment building; stucco over brick; pressed metal projecting bays; central stair marked by configuration of pressed metal swan's neck pediment, Palladian windows. and broken pediment. Pressed metal dentillated and modillioned cornice.”

            Robert M. Patton was married to Caroline (Carrie) H. Patton. He died July 13, 1903 in Philadelphia.

 

1910:

Emma M. Engard        24        Boarder; clerk in drug store (?)

            In 1900, Mary C. Engard lived with six of her children at 3720 Brown St. At time, she stated that eight of her children were surviving. Her daughter, Emma was born in August 1884. Mary died on June 21, 1916 at 2802 N. 11th St. She was born Nov. 15, 1847. She was the daughter of William L. Gray and Maria L. Hedges (?-1894). She was married to William Engard (1844-1918).

            He still lived here in 1940. He was still single.

 

1936, May 24: Death of George Buchanan Wells, 82 years old, of 312 N. 33rd St.

            In 1910, they lived at 3302 Baring St. (See that page for biographical information.)  In 1930, he and his wife, Helen, and their two daughters, Edith and Annie, lived at 3305 Baring St. Helen and their daughters were still living here in 1940.

 

1944, Mar. 22: Death of Charlotte A. Barnett, 72 years old, of 312 N. 33rd St.

 

1947, June 1: Death of Emma C. Barnett, 77 years old, of 312 N. 33rd St. Funeral at the Church of the Savior-Episcopal, Philadelphia, burial in Riegelsville, Pa.

1881 Directory: Louis K. Kerbaugh printers’ materials at 512 Commerce

            The 1890 directory lists him at 411 N. 33rd St.

 

1885: Horace G. Hill, M.D., a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, became a member of the Philadelphia Medical Society. His thesis was entitled “The Germ Theory in its Relation to Preventive Medicine.”  He was raised at 3405 Hamilton St.

 

1886: Marriage of Maria Louisa Bennett of 3410 Race St. and Horace G. Hill of 314 N. 33rd St.

            They soon moved to 3416 Baring St.

 

1889 Directory: Benjamin Armitage, architect

            In 1887, he was listed at 3724 Baring.

 

1890, Jan. 7: Death of Alfred Creveling, 58 years old, of 314 N. 33rd St. He was born in Espy, Pa.

            In 1880, he and his family lived at 3709 Spring Garden St.

 

1891, Sep. 21: Death of Caroline W. Leslie, 314 N. 33rd St.; born in Philadelphia, burial at Ronaldson's County

            The 1890 directory lists Charles M. Rawlings, 648 N. 35th St.

            John was the son of James M. and Elizabeth J. Barton. In 1900, they lived at 5804 Haverford. James was a theater manager born in Ireland. John’s brother, James C. Barton, was also an actor as were John and James’s wives. John and Annie had been married 3 years. In 1920, John, Sarah and Phoebe (Helen) were living in the new Grey Gables Apartments at this address. Sarah was the building manager.
