A small house sat on this lot before 1860. It was replaced with the current structure in 1895

 

“three-story Colonial Revival-style, brick house with arched entry, altered porch; paired second- and third-floor windows with brownstone sills and lintels; pressed metal cornice with dentils, egg-and-dart detail, and modillicins, and flat roof --- Contributing.”

            In 1860, he reported $4,500 in real estate and $1,500 in personal property. The 1868 directory lists him living at 2038 Vine St.

            Emily Roberts was the daughter of Edward Lewis who lived across Powelton Ave. at 3234 Powelton Ave. where she grew up.  She and Alfred Roberts were married April 15, 1880.  (The census was in June.)  She was listed in the 1891 directory living with her parents and she and Sydney were living there in 1900.  Alfred Reginald Roberts was an 1871 graduate of Haverford College. He was the son of Solomon Roberts and Anna Rickey.  The 1900 census lists him as a patient at the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane at 49th and Market.  He was 46.  He died Feb. 15, 1901 and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery.

1890, Jan. 18: Death of Sallie H. Lewars, 25 years old, of 310 N. 33rd St.  She was listed as married and born in Philadelphia.  Burial was at Ivey Hill Cemetery.

1894, Nov. 4: “Pressed brick and brown stone are the main materials to be used in a three-story dwelling, 27.5 x 51.6 feet, which is to be erected on the west side of Thirty-third Street, north of Powelton Avenue, for Sarah Ellen Wiltbank.” (Builders’ Guide)

            Thomas Saunder Wiltbank and Ella S. Righter were married in Philadelphia in 1893. His first wife, Caroline Carrie Marriner, died in 1881.  In 1880, they lived at 1840 Seybert St. with their 3-year-old son, Gilbert.  He died Jan. 17 1896 at age 19.  He was living at 1320 N. 19th St.  Thomas and Caroline also had a daughter who died in 1881, the same year as her mother.

            Ella S. Righter was previously married to Richard W. Crook. They were married in 1871. He died in March 1893.

            The 1911 directory lists Nancy Metzgar, widow of John L. Metzgar, living at 6226 Clearview, Germantown.  Also at that address was John M. Metgzar . The 1912 directory lists Viola Metzgar living at 253 Sydney in Germantown.  She was listed as a clerk.  Also at that address was John L. Metgzar, possibly Jr.

 

1921 Directory: Candace H. Scott, widow of Winfield S.

            In 1920, Mrs. Candace Scott was living in Akron, Ohio.  In 1930, she lived at 3422 Powelton Ave.  In 1940, she lived with her son, Dr. Walter Scott, at 3412 Baring St.  In 1900, the Scott family lived in Richland, Guernsey Co., Ohio where Winfield was a physician, the son of James Scott.  He died in 1909.  Bernice Scott was born June 28, 1880; therefore, she was 60 years old.  She was married to Alfred A. J. Hoge (or Hogg).

            Candace Scott died March 27, 1943 and was buried in Senecaville, Guernsey County, Ohio.

 

1923, July 9: Death of Sara Wiltbank, 69 years old, of 310 N. 33rd St.. She was the daughter of Anderson and Annie Elizabeth Reigliter.

            The informant for the death certificate was Robert R. Crook.

 

1925, May 21: Death of George L. Standring, 54 years old, of carbon monoxide poisoning.

            In 1920, George and Anna Standring and their son, John, lived at 3500 Hamilton St.

 

1927, Oct. 11: Death of Thomas S. Wiltbank, 80 years old at Atlantic City; internment at Mt. Peace Cemetery
