3614-16: “three-story, Victorian double, brick with stone facade, flat roof with elaborate wood cornice; Victorian wood
porch; incised stone lintels”

Previous Residents

 

1875, Nov. 11: Title for 3614-16 Baring St. & 3621 Pearl St. transferred to Hiram K. Witner by Mary G. W. Maxwell

            Hiram K. Witner lived at 1917 Spring Garden St. The 1880 census lists him as 44 years old living with his wife, Mary A. E. Witner (41), and their son William R. (15). Also living with them was Hiram’s brother-in-law, Frank P. Rosengarten. The 1880 census does not list an occupation. The 1870 census lists him as a commercial trader with real estate valued at $6,000 and an equal amount of personal property. The 1872 directory lists him as a trader in fish at the Spruce St. Wharf. The 1882 directory lists him as the secretary at 134 S. 4th St. In 1880, this was the meeting place of the Sons of Temperance.

            In 1870, Edward Keen lived at 3324 Spring Garden St. with his parents, Jason and Cornelia Keen.

            The 1882 directory lists all of them at 304 N. 35th St. In 1900, they lived at 487 Chester Ave., although Edward Keen was deceased.

                         Paul J. Auza

            Francisco J. Auza was a wealthy sugar planter from Santiago, Cuba. He was born in 1862 in St. Jago, Cuba. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1878 and was naturalized as a citizen in 1884.

                          Sebastian M. Auza

                                    Sabastian Auza was born in 1870 in Santiago, Cuba. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1880 and was naturalized as a citizen. He entered the University of Pennsylvania with the Class of 1892, but may not have graduated. In 1898, he married Georgia Chatham.

 

1895, Sept. 26: Death of Maria Auza, 23 years old, of 3616 Baring St. She was born in Cuba and never married. She was the daughter of Francisco J. and Dolores Auza. Requium High Mass at St. Agatha's Church. Burial at Cathedral cemetery.

1899 Directory: Lillie Everett boarding

                         John H. Bowen, U.S.N.

            The 1898 directory lists Lillian T. Everett, widow of Josiah, living at 438 N. 33rd St. In 1891, Mrs. Lillian T. Everett is listed as a stenographer in the directory for Williamsport, Pa.

            The 1900 census lists Lillian Everett and her son, Edward F. Everett, living at 721 N. 40th St. She was 40 years old and running an apartment house. He was 16 and a clerk for the railroad. They still lived there in 1910. She was listed as divorced. He was listed as a doctor of dentistry.

1901: Miss Anna Gannon. Member: American Academy of Political and Social Science. (Handbook, 1901.)

            “GANNON, Anna, author; b. Phila., June 6, 1876; d. Thomas G.; studied Girls' High School and Acad. Notre Dame, Phila., 1892; visited Europe, 1896, 1898, and 1899. Contributor to mags., periodicals and the press generally. Her poem, "A Dream of Shakespeare's Women," is in the repertoire of Julia Marlowe, who first recited it. Author: The Song of Stradella, and Other Songs, 1899 L5. Address: 3616 Baring St., Philadelphia.”  (Who’s Who in America, 1901.)

            Her The Song of Stradella and other Songs was published by J. P. Lippincott in 1898.

            In 1900, the Sadler family lived at 3809 Baring St. Kendall Sadler, Sr. was a coal dealer. Kendall C. Sadler, Sr. died at the Medico-Chirugical Hospital of a brain tumor in January 1916. In 1920, Louise, Kendall, Jr. and Maude were living at 3408 Race St. where she was again keeping a boarding house. Kendall C. Sadler, Jr. married Nancy C. Campbell in New York City, Sept. 17, 1913.

            Elizabeth Ware was the widow of Rev. William George Ware. In 1880, they lived at 762 S. 15th St. Florence (Fanny) was 5 years old. Rev. Ware died in 1904 at age 54. He was the chaplain at Episcopal Hospital.

            Ernest Cooper was born Hull Sutton, Yorkshire, England, the son of James Cooper and Martha Howard. In 1881, he was two years old, the youngest of five children.  His father, a lathe maker in a boot factory, was born in Nottinghamshire. His mother and two oldest siblings were born in Grantham, Lincolnshire. Ernest and Mathilda Antonia Ben-ayad were married in the summer of 1902 in Leicester. He was 23 and she was about 32. Mathilde was born in 1870, the daughter of Mohaned Benayad who was born in Algiers, Algeria. He was a grocer’s assistant in Leicester in 1881. In 1901, she was working for a bootmaker. In 1930 through at least 1950, they lived next door at 3614 Baring St.

            James Schofield and Blanche Woelpper were married in Philadelphia in 1907. They had a son, Frederic, in addition to their daughter, Elizabeth. They lived here in 1935. In 1930, they lived at 3744 Fairmont Ave. which they owned. James’s parents were born in England. In 1920, they lived with her parents, Frederick and Elizabeth Woelpper, at 3832 Fairmont. Frederick was an upholsterer for an automobile manufacturer.

 

1950 Directory: John J. Fitzgerald

                        In 1930, John J. and Mary Fitzgerald lived with their son, John J., Jr., at 2220 N. 17th St. John, Sr (age 65) and Mary (60) were born in Ireland and immigrated in 1900. Father and son had a retail cleaning establishment. John J. Fitzgerald purchased 3605 Hamilton St. in 1940 and John, Jr. and James A. Fitzgerald (his son?), lived there in 1950.
