The History of the Building

 

302-304 N. 35th St. were designed and built by Wilson Brothers & Co.  They were torn down about 1960 for the playground of the Samuel Powel Elementary School.

            The 1874 directory listed him living at 3201 Arch St.  The 1877 directory listed him living at 233 S 42nd.

            John A. Wilson was the son of William Hasell Wilson and Jane Miller who lived at 3501 Powelton Ave.

            Elizabeth Wilson and Emily Loyd were the daughters of William and Elizabeth B. Loyd.  In 1870, they lived at 2204 Brandywine St.

1893, April 16, Phila Inquirer: “West Philadelphia's contribution to the fashionable weddings of the week was the nuptials miss Edith Shapleigh, daughter of the late Dr. E. R. Shapleigh, and Francis Sellers Garrett [3631 Hamilton St.] in St. Andrews P. E. Church, at noon Wednesday. The officiating clergymen were Rev. John R. Moses, of St. James Church, and Rev. C. M. Armstrong, of St. Andrews. The bride wore an Empire gown of white bengaline, trimmed with duchess lace, and carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley. The maid of honor was miss Anna Blandy, and she wore Japanese crepe, a satin cloak trimmed swansdown and a white chip hat.

            "J. George Klemm, Jr., was the best man. The ushers were: John S. Loyd, William H. Loyd, Jr., W. Hasell Wilson, Jr., T. Wilson Loyd, George Bissell, Arthur Spruance, Alexander Sellers, and Harry Miller.

            "After the marriage a breakfast, attended only by the immediate families, was given at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John A.  Wilson, aunt and uncle of the bride, 302 North 36th street.”

 

1894, Oct. 30: Marriage of Elizabeth B. Wilson to Walter Willets Pharo.

1898 Blue Book: Alfred N. Keim was a member of the Powelton Club. (For a brief history of the club, see the Powelton History Blog.)

            Alfred Keim was a lawyer.  He was in the class of 1894 at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.  The 1895 directory lists him at 2039 Brandywine with an office at 608 Chestnut St.  He is also listed at this address in the 1906 Blue Book, but was not enumerated anywhere in the 1900 census.  In 1910, he was a boarder at 3411 Race St.

 

1899, Nov. 7: Death of Emma C. Fudge at age 48.  The cause of death was given as “phthisis” which can refer to a general wasting of the body or to a lung disease, e.g., tuberculosis.

            The 1900 census recorded her husband, Henry, and her daughter Elizabeth, living at 208 N. 36th St.  She was buried at Westminster Cemetery.

            Mary Askew Hicks, the mother of Anna Baker and Thomas and Sarah Hicks, was enumerated next door (304 N. 35th St.) who was listed as the housekeeper.

            Charles Wilson Goudy died May 1, 1903.  They were living in Haddonfield, N.J.  He was a member of the Poughkeepsie Monthly Meeting of Friends (Quaker).

 

1900, July 9: Death of Sarah M. Hicks, 54 years old, of 302 N. 35th St.

 

1905, Oct. 19: Marriage of Mary Hicks Baker and Francis V. Warren 315 N. 35th St.  They moved to 312 N. 37th St.  They were married at Arch St. Friends meeting.

 

1908, Sep. 21: Death of Thomas A. Hicks, 64 years old, of 304 N. 35th St.

 

1910: The census combines 302 and 304 with no indication of who lives where.

1925, Feb. 21: Death of William Armstrong, 52 years old, of 302 N. 35th St.; burial at Lock Haven, Pa.

            Marion (Allen) Armstrong and William H. Armstrong were married in Philadelphia in 1900.  She was the daughter of David and Rachel Allen.  In 1900 and 1910, Rachel lived at 3703 Powelton Ave.  In 1920, William and Marion lived with their daughter at 3632 Powelton Ave.
