The History of the Building

 

Before about 1890, this was numbered 329.

 

three-story. Italianate-style double, stuccoed; recessed side entrance with original porches. First-floor front projecting wood bays with paired ornate brackets and frieze below cornice. Second-floor casement windows; third-floor. pointed windows. Shallow-pitched gable end, faces street. Large ornate paired brackets below roof overhang”

1863, May: Deed transferred from Rudolph K. Stewart to Susanna R. Berridge.

            Rudolph K. Stewart sold trimmings at a store at the S.E. corner of 8th & Chestnut.  The 1861 directory lists him living at 754 S. 10th St.

            Leeds K. Berridge and his wife Susanna R. became involved in a law suit involving ownership of a strip of land on Haverford St. after 35th St. was resurveyed in 1854-’55. (see: Atlantic Reporter, vol. 7, 1887 p 750.)  He served as a hospital chaplain in the Army from July, 1862 until August, 1864.

            He is not listed in the 1864 directory.

                         Henry A. Smith, Rev.

                              Rev. Smith was pastor of the First Mantua Presbyterian Church, 36th & Bridge which became the Northminster Presbyterian Church.  In 1864-’66, he lived with the family of James Ferree at 3404 Spring Garden St.  In 1866, he married Louisa Andrews, daughter of Alexander and Amelia Andrews, 3507 Baring St.  In 1870, Henry and Louisa lived at 3413 Hamilton St.  In 1880, they lived at 3705 Hamilton St.

            In the 1854 Directory, they were listed at Grape [now Melon St.] ab 6th [35th St.], Mantua.

 

1878, June 19: Death of Leonard Frailey, 90 years old, of 329 N. 33rd St.  He was listed as married and was born in Philadelphia.  Burial was at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

1895, Nov. 13: Death of Leeds K. Berridge, 84 years old, of 407 N. 33rd St.   Burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

 

1897, May 19: Death of Susanna Berridge, 76 years old, of 407 N. 33rd St.  She was born July 7, 1820.  She died from diseases of the heart.   Burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

            Mary Frialey Berridge died Oct. 2, 1925 in Philadelphia.

Edward Kelly                          53        Brother-in-law; machinist making roller bearings; single; parents born in Ireland

            William F. Eisenhower and Catherine Kelly registered their marriage in Philadelphia in 1888. She had previously been married to Charles Kelly. Their son, Charles F. Kelly, became District Attorney. In 1910, they were living at 781 N. 27th St.  They also had a daughter, Isabelle G. Eisenhower who was 17.

            In 1917, they were living at 435 N. 33rd St.

            In 1930, Edward J. Kelly was living next door at 405 N. 33rd St.

1928: Marriage of Frances M. Gillin to Alexander D. Eisenhower.

            In 1930 they were living in an apartment at 3600 Spring Garden St.  In 1942, they were living at 1414 Spruce St. and he was working in the District Attorney’s office.

 

1930:

William F. Eisenhower             70        Foreman for steam railroad; owner, house valued at $5,000

Edna Eisenhower                    22        Daughter; secretary for law firm; single

 

1931, Feb. 24: Death of William F. Eisenhower, 72 years old of chronic myocarditis

            Edna Eisenhower married Edward J. Field in 1938. In 1940, they lived in Springfield, Delaware Co.

 

1940:

John Farley                  53        Born in NY; 4 years of high school; lived in this house in 1935; renting for $40 per month

Louise C. Farley           51        Four years of high school

John Farley, Jr.             31        Truck drive for cigar manufacturer, earned $1,800 in 1939; 4 years of high school

James Farley                26        Manager at drug warehouse, earned $1,400 in 1939; born in NJ; 4 years of high school

Eugene Farley              25        Unemployed for more than 52 weeks, previously was a clerical worker at drug warehouse; born in NJ; 4 years of high school
