The History of the Building

 

3701-19: “two-and-one-half story Second Empire style doubles; stone facade over brick. First-floor Victorian porches; some altered-(3703, 3705-07, 3709, 3719); four registers, slate- shingled mansard (3701, 3705-07, 3709 asphalt); slightly arched dormer windowheads. All built by the same developer.”

            Henry Augustus Smith was Pastor of the Northminster Presbyterian Church from July, 1864 to 1882. In 1864-1866, he lived in the home of James B. Ferree at 3404 Spring Garden St. The 1867 city directory lists him in the home of Rev. K. Berridge, 329 (407) N. 33rd St. In 1875, while he was Pastor, the new church was opened at 3500 Baring St. In 1870, Henry and Louisa lived at 3413 Hamilton St. She died in August, 1878 at age 32.

 

1883, Mar. 8: Death of Rev. Henry Augustus Smith, 31 years old from “disease of the bladder.”

            Alexander N. Smith died Jan. 30, 1899 in Redlands, San Bernardino Co., Calif.

 

1885, August: Deed transferred from Isaac & Caroline E. (wife) Hazlehurst to Emma C. Granger.

 

1887 Directory: William R. Granger, buyer

            In 1880, the Granger family lived at 3925 Woodland Ave. His mother, Sarah R. Granger, lived with them as did his sister Josephine, a teacher (see below).

1890 Census Veterans Schedule: William Granger, Private, Keystone, Pa., Artillery Battery, Aug. 1862 - Aug. 1863. ( ED 590, 3)

 

1891, Aug. 15: Death of William Rowan Granger, 51 years old. He was born in Connecticut. Burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

1898, April: Morris K. Granger served in the 3rd Pennsylvania Infantry from April through August of 1898 during the Spanish American War.

1902: Marriage of Annie G. Conner to Morris K. Granger. They apparently divorced, then remarried in 1932. They were living together in 1940.

Annie Campbell           42        Servant; black; born in British West Indies, immigrated 1898

            Between about 1925 and 1927, Morris Kinzie Granger moved among several homes for disabled volunteer soldiers. He suffered from Dupuytren’s contracture, an inherited disease that leads to an inability to straighten the fingers. He spent time in homes in Virginia, Ohio, Kansas, N. Dakota, and Los Angeles. He died in 1943 and was buried from the Church of the Redemption (Episcopal).

 

1922, Feb. 22: Death of Emma C. Granger, 81 years old

 

1922, May: Deed transferred from West Philadelphia Title & Trust Co. Trust of Emma C Granger (dec'd) to Anthony & Bridget (wife) Gallagher.
