On January 6, 1859, Robert Steen bought the NE corner of Hamilton St. and 35th: 211 feet along Hamilton, 92 feet on 35th. Rev. Henry Augustus. Smith

            Rev. Smith was Pastor of the First Mantua Presbyterian Church, 35th & Bridge (Spring Garden St. which became the Northminster Presbyterian Church. In 1864-’66, he lived with the family of James Ferree at 3404 Spring Garden St. In 1866, he married Louisa Andrews, daughter of Alexander and Amelia Andrews, 3507 Baring St. At that time, he was living at 329 (now 407) N. 33rd St. In 1880, Henry was widowed and living at 3705 Hamilton St. with his three daughters. He died in 1882 at about age 49.

 

1873: Rev. Smith was embroiled in a dispute with Albert Ashmead (3500 Hamilton St.) over a petition regarding muddy sidewalks in front of the church. For the full story see the Powelton History Blog.

            Mary Cloud was the daughter of Elijah Pugh (3501 Hamilton St.) by his first wife, Lattice Bernard. She attended the Westtown School and married Charles Cloud in 1849. She died in 1894 in Ardmore, Pa.

            In 1870, they lived in the 24th Ward, District 80. Charles was a bricklayer. In the 1887 directory, he was listed as an assistant auditor and was living in Montgomery Co. In 1900, they lived in Ardmore, Pa. Lattice died in 1887.

            Sarah Cottman was also enumerated next door at 3415 Hamilton St.

 

1887 Directory: Mary T. Moore, widow of Augustus

            In 1887, Mary was about 49 years old. Her husband was a grocer. In 1880, they lived in Tivoli, Dutchess Co., N.Y. In 1900, she lived at 3225 Mt. Vernon St., Philadelphia with her daughter (one of her three children) and her unmarried sister-in-law.

1898: “Albert W. Dilks, architect, 1001 Chestnut street, has made complete plans for extensive alterations to the residence of Robert Steen [sic.], 3413 Hamilton street, and contractors are estimating on the work, which includes considerable interior as well as exterior, hot air heat, electric work, plate and leaded glass and general improvements, etc.” (Phila. Builders’ Guide, Feb. 16)

            The property was still owned by the estate of Robert Steen. His son, Robert, is listed in the 1897 as a contractor living at 626 N. 36th St.

            “J. E. & A. L. Pennock are taking estimates on alterations to the building at 3413 Hamilton street.” (Inquirer, Feb. 8)

            John E. Parker married Edna B Haselet in Philadelphia in 1902.

            Edna G. Hazel was the widow of William M. Hazel (born 1849), a clerk at the mint. They were married about 1885. In 1900, they lived at 3740 Powelton Ave.

 

1918 WWI Draft Registration: William G. Hazel. He was born in October 1887 in Georgetown, Del. He was secretary of Dalton Machine Co. and single.

            “John E. Parker with Charles Gilbert Hall - Charles Gilbert Hall, advertising agent of Philadelphia, announces that John E. Parker, for many years with the Curtis Publishing Company, is now associated with him as an adviser in art plans.” (Printers' Ink, Vol. 115, 1921)

 

1920, December: Deed transferred from W. Austin Obdyke (Surv Trustee of Will of Robert Steen) to John E. Parker.

            It was purchased for $8,000. (Inquirer, Dec. 24)

            Wade Lytton Jolly, Jr. (1909-1976) grew up in the home of his grandparents at 1215 S. Broad St. His parents were divorced. He ran the Texas School of Fine Arts, Fort Worth’s first fine arts school, with Evaline Sellors and Blance McVeigh until 1938. “The school presented ground-breaking exhibitions, introducing Fort Worth to works of leading contemporary painters, sculptors and graphic artists whose work had never been seen in the city.”  (http://www.fortworthheritagetrails.com/longhorn.html)  He enlisted in the Army as a warrant officer in April 1942 and served until Nov. 1945.
