The History of the Building

 

3720-22: “three-story, Italianate double with bracketed flat overhanging roof, stuccoed. 1905 Colonial Revival porch; Circa 1950 colonial first-floor windows…. 3722 has side projecting bay.”

            Herbert Thomas Garber was the son of Thomas M. Garber and Josephine Thomas.  In 1860, John Garber lived with widowed mother and three sisters at 411 N. 33rd St.  Herbert Garber and Lillie May Hoffman were married Dec. 14, 1892 at Grace Church Episcopal Chapel in Philadelphia.  In 1906, they lived with his sisters at 201 N. 35th St.  In 1910, they were living at 1206 S. 46th St.  In 1923, Josephine Garber married John N. P. Easby, 3316 Powelton Ave.  Herbert Garber died April 13, 1929.  He was working for John Wanamaker.

 

1903, Jan. 31: Wanted: “Housework – Girl wanted, housework, small family, private, $4.00 a week. 3722 Baring St.” (Inquirer)

            Ads of this sort were very common around the turn of the century and this household advertised frequently in 1903-1904..
