The History of the Building

 

307-09: “two-and-one-half story brick Second Empire-style double. Some slate shingles remain. Fenestration and facade radically altered circa 1925. First-floor front brick addition; 309 later stuccoed.”

            The second enumeration only gives approximate ages for adults.

            The first enumeration of the 1870 census lists them living in Ward 15.  He was working as a railroad clerk.  It lists his birthplace as Prussia.

 

1871 Directory (Fall, 1870): Frederick W. Schwartz, clerk at 1123 Chestnut St.

1894 Directory: Hulda Spackman widow of George

            The 1880 census lists her as 48 years old.  George was working at a livery stable.  Her mother, Anna Whitney, lived with them.

1900:

Margaret Selby             38        Servant; black; born in Md.

            The 1895 directory lists him at 3412 Powelton Ave.  He was the son of George W. Mullin and Catherine M. Hunter (Phila Death Records).  The 1908 directory lists him at 4038 Spruce St.

            “Gordon H. Mullin died yesterday at his home, 4010 Spruce street, Philadelphia, from dropsy, which developed from pneumonia of which he had been suffering.  Mr. Mullin was associated with George F. Ross in the management and proprietorship of Lochfel hotel, this city, for three years before Charles Duffy.  He was married to the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony King, of this city.  He is survived by his wife and one daughter.”  (Inquirer, Dec. 14, 1909)
