History

 

1863 Directory (complied in fall, 1862):

            Alfred Grayson, student

            Frederick William Grayson, editor

            F. W. Grayson, publisher at 152 S. 3rd St.

                        In the 1864 directory, he was listed at Baring St. above 35th.  By 1867 he was living at 122 S. 42nd St.

 

1865 Directory: J. G. Fisler, coal dealer at 208 S. 4th St.

 Jacob G. Fisler, clerk at Customhouse

            The 1864 directory listed him at 3722 Baring St.  In 1860, he was living in Fallowfield, Chester Co.  He was a 29 year-old farmer living with his wife, their four children, his mother, a servant and a farm hand.  He claimed $9,000 in personal property, but no real estate.

 

1866 Directory: Jacob G. Fisler, clerk

 

1867 Directory: J. G. Fisler, coal dealer at 208 S. 4th St.

            In 1870, he and his family were living in another neighborhood in West Philadelphia.  He was a lumber merchant.  In 1880, they were living at 1819 N. 22nd St.

 

1868 Directory: Jacob G. Fisler of Fisler & Parke (Jacob G. Fisler & F. G. Parke), lumber at 208 S. 4th St.

 

1870 and 1871 Directories: James W. English, commercial merchant at 236 N. Broad

            In 1860, they lived on the 3300 block of Hamilton St.  The 1867 directory lists him at 3714 Baring St.

            The 1874 directory lists him living at 415 N. 38th St.

            The 1875 gives her address as 434 S. 40th St.

            Charles first wife, Alice Cheyney, died in 1869 at age 29.  Their daughter, Mary Louise, died a few days later at 2 months of age.  In 1882, he married Ella L. Walraven in Wilmington, New Castle, Del.

 

1887 Directory: James M. Gilbough of Schlaich & Gilbaugh, produce merchants at 34 N. Delaware Ave. and 35 N. Water St.

                          Lewis Gilbough [James’s son], broker

            James Gilbough and Ann Woodward married in 1852.  In 1860, they lived in East Fallowfield, Chester Co.  Her mother, Eleanor Supplee, was born in Hestonville, Philadelphia Co.  (Note that previous residents here, the Fislers, were from Fallowfield.)  James Gilbough moved to Philadelphia about 1862.  The 1863 directory lists him as a “huckster” and in 1864, he was selling produce.  In 1874, he became the first president of the Philadelphia Produce Exchange.  In 1880, they were living at 717 S. 23rd St.  He was listed in the census as a merchant.

 

1888: Marriage license issued to Sallie W. Gilbough and William W. Macfarlane

In 1910, they lived at 308 N. 37th St.

 

1889 Blue Book: Mr. & Mrs. James M. Gilbough

 

1889: Marriage license issued to Anna S. Gilbough and Everett Ross Haffelfinger

            Everett Haffelfinger was living at 1916 Brown St.

 

1890 Directory: James M. Gilbough of Schlaich & Gilbaugh, commercial merchants at 34 N. Delaware Ave.

 

1898 Blue Book: Mr. & Mrs. J. M. Gilbough; receiving day: Thursday.

1911 Directory: Everett R. Haffelfinger vice-president of Carey Bros. Wall Paper Manuf. Co.

            In 1920, he was living with his mother, Sarah C. Haffelfinger, in Hanover, York Co., Pa.  He was still working in wall paper manufacturing.

 

1912, May 1: Death of Annie Gilbough, 80 years old.

            She was the daughter of Moses Woodward and Eleanor Supplee.

            James Gilbough died in 1916 when he was living with his daughter and son-in-law, Sallie and William Macfarlane, at 308 N. 37th St.

            In 1900, Rosathy Harron (Reinhold) was living in Galeton, Potter Co., Pa.  She was widowed with her five surviving children.  The youngest was William C. Harron.  She was the landlady and owner of a house with a hotel clerk and one servant.

            In 1930, Norman and Alice McDonald lived in Narberth, Montgomery Co., Pa.  In 1940, they were living in Chestnut Hill.  He was the son of Andrew T. and Agnes Macdonald.
