3414 Hamilton Street

 

 

 

3412-22: “two-and-one-half story brick doubles. Pressed corbelled brick detail. Original wood porches on 3412-14 and 3420-22….. Each house has shingled gable in mansard roof. Architect: G.W. and W.D. Hewitt.”

3412-3422 Hamilton were built by John Shedwick. He and his sons built many homes in Powelton. They lived at 3408 Race St.

 

History

 

1860, July: Deed transferred from Samuel Hutchinson to (Estate of?) Robert Steen (Sheriff sale).

 

1882, December: Deed transferred from John G. Steen, et al., Executors of Robert Steen to John Shedwick.

            This transfer included 3412-3422 Hamilton St.

 

1884, May. 15: Title transferred to Rebecca G. Gilbert by John Shedwick

 

1885 Directory [Fall, 1884]: Frederick B. Gilbert, manager, 630 Chestnut

            In 1880, he lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. with his first wife, Rebecca Baker Gilbert, and their son Fred B. Gilbert. He was a jewelry salesman. The 1882-1884 directories list him living at 3502 Hamilton St.

1893, December 24: Death of Donna C. Baker, 70 years old, widow of Capt. M. S. Baker; funeral at her late residence, 3414 Hamilton St.

 

1895, June 12: Death of Reba J. Gilbert, wife of Frederic B. Gilbert at Devon. Funeral at her late residence, 3414 Hamilton St.

 

1900, March 26: Death of Vesta Gilbert, 19 years old, daughter of Frederic B. Gilbert and the late Reba J. Gilbert. Funeral service at her father's residence, 3414 Hamilton St.

1902, Jan. 29: Death of James W. Campbell, 34 years old of 3414 Hamilton St. (He was probably the son of Malcolm Campbell who lived at 3602 Hamilton St. in 1870.)

 

1904, Feb. 15: Title transferred to Frederick B. Gilbert, Sr., et al. by will

 

1906 Blue Book: Mr. & Mrs. Frederick B. Gilbert

            In 1910, Frederick (the son) was living at 4817 Divinity St. with his wife, Elizabeth Ratall Gilbert. They had been married 6 years and did not have any children. He was a salesman for Bell Telephone. In 1920, they were still at 4817 Divinity. They had two sons. Elizabeth’s mother, J. Marguerite Ratall, lived with them as did Frederick’s widowed brother[-in-law], Jerome Biddle, and his nephew, William W. Biddle (age 5). Francis was an inspector for the gas company.

 

1907, Oct. 13: Death of Frederic Bellamy Gilbert [Sr.] at his summer residence, Bryn Mawr, Pa. He was 64 years old. Funeral services at his previous residence, 3414 Hamilton St. He was buried in Brooklyn, N.Y. Services were led by Rev. H. Richard Harris of Grace Church Episcopal Chapel.

            Ethel N. Street and Henry D’Olier, Jr. were married at St. Mathew’s Episcopal Church (Francisville), Philadelphia on Oct. 24, 1906.

 

1920, Jan. 20: 3414 Hamilton St. was offered for sale. The advertised price was between $4,000 and $8,000. (Evening Public Ledger)

            Henry Alford Boggs and the Colladay sisters lived at 3706 Hamilton St. in 1910 and 1917. He was Pastor of the Princeton Presbyterian Church. The Colladay sisters were listed as living on their “own income.”

 

1920, Apr. 15: Title transferred to Henry A. Boggs by Frederick B. Gilbert, Sr., et al.
