The History of the Building

 

The Registry of Deeds and Mortgages, City and County of Philadelphia gives a date of 1867-’68 for this building.

 

3620-22: “two-and-one-half story, gabled front brick Italianate double. Circa 1895 Colonial Revival porch and shutters”

1866, Apr. 27: Title for 3620-3622 Hamilton St. transferred to Wesley Sloan by John Magrow

 

1867, Jul. 30: Title transferred to Samuel W. Leinau by Wesley Sloan

            The 1871-‘73 directories list Leinau living at 22 S. 36th St. His shop was at 111 S. 7th St. The 1878 directory lists him living at 3329 Chestnut St. and in partnership with Roberts Leinau who lived at the same address. He did the plumbing and gas fitting during the building of the Union League.

            Ursula Leinau was probably the aunt of the owner, Samuel W. Leinau. She had a younger brother, Samuel Willston Leinau, who apparently died as an infant.

            [The first enumeration lists “Sarah Lyno” age 40. The second census enumeration in November 1870, lists “U. Lina” aged 60-64, a male.]
            The two Roberts boys were probably orphans who were boarders here. In 1880, they were boarders at 3350 Walnut St.

 

1873 Directory: Ursula Leinau

 

1874, May 28: Death of Ursula Leinau, 69 years old, of 3622 Hamilton St.; funeral at the home of her brother, Mr. Daniel Leinau, 716 N. 12th St.

 

1875, Jun. 21: Title transferred to George W. Rud by Samuel W. Leinau

 

1877 Directory: Thatcher Jesse W., physician

            The next year he and his family moved to 3717 Hamilton St. In 1890, he bought 3500 Hamilton St. See biographies and photos at that page.

 

1880:

Fanny D. Moore          25        School teacher; born in Del.

James C. Moore           22        Bookkeeper; born in Del.

            The 1881 directory lists James C. Moore, a clerk, living at 338 N. 32nd St. [410 N. 32nd St.]. In 1900, he was living with his wife and two daughters in Lansdowne, Del.

 

1890 Directory: Edward W. Smithson

            In 1895 and 1900, he lived with his son at 3510 Hamilton St. In 1900, he was 82 years old.

 

1892, Jun. 6: Title transferred to Conrad Engelkraut, Jr. by George W. Rud

 

1900:

Mary T. Robison          21        Married less than a year, no children

Jamie Nugent               18        Servant; born in Ireland, immigrated 3 years earlier

            The 1895 directory lists him as a student living at 609 N. 43rd St. Her maiden name was Mary L Thomson. In 1910, they were divorced. She and their son were living with her father at 3432 Powelton Ave. Mary and Jamie/John returned to live here in 1940 (see below).

 

1910:

Martha B. Altemus       54        Widowed, one child; renting

Ellen S. Altemus          19

            Martha Newlin Blundin married Edward E. Altemus in 1886 in Philadelphia married under the auspices of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. The 1880 census lists him as 33 years-old, widowed with 2 daughters. In 1920, Martha and Eleanor (Ellen) lived at 3509 Baring St. In 1900, they were living at 1702 Spring Garden St. with Edward and Eleanora Levy. Martha is listed as his sister-in-law and Eleanor is listed as his granddaughter. Martha is listed as widowed, married 15 years [before she was widowed) with one child. Martha was listed as living at that address in 1881 before her marriage.

 

1918, WWI Draft Registration:  Morrow Wayne Palmer, “draftee statistician” for J. G. Brill & Co., manufacturers of street cars.

            In 1920, he and his wife lived at 3612 Hamilton St. (see that page for more information about them).

 

1919, Sep. 11: Title transferred to Emily A. Rittenhouse, wife of William G. by Conrad Engelkraut, Jr.

            She purchased 3620 in 1914.

 

1920, January:

Harry C. Banks            72        Owner with a mortgage

Delia S. Banks             58        Father born in Germany

            Delia was Harry’s second wife. His son lived next door at 3620 Hamilton St. In 1900, they all lived at 6327 Drexel Rd., Ward 34. At that time, Harry C., Sr. was a clerk for a steel company. In 1910, they were all living in Lower Merion.

 

1920, Mar. 11: Title transferred to Harry C. and Delia Banks by Emily A. Rittenhouse, wife of William G.

            Their son and daughter-in-law purchased 3620 the same day.

 

1921, Apr. 15: Title transferred to Florence B. Ring by Harry C. and Delia Banks

            Their son and daughter-in-law sold 3620 a few weeks later.

 

1930:

Annie B. Ring              57        Public school teacher; divorced; born in N.J., parents born in N.Y.; owner, house valued at $6,000

 

1936, Mar. 28: Title transferred to Helen Twaddell by Florence B. Ring

            Helen Twaddell already owned 3620 next door where she lived.

 

1940:

Mary Robison              59        Divorced; 4 years of high school; renting for $45 per month, lived here in 1935

John Robison               39        Clerk for railroad; single; 4 years of high school; earned $800 for 28 weeks of work in 1939

 

1951, Oct. 30: Title transferred to E. Bernard Zimmerman by Helen Twaddell and then immediately transferred to George N. and Gertrude Schroth and on the same day to William P., Jr. and Catherine Keaveny.

            William P., Jr. and Catherine Keaveny purchased 3620 the same day. They sold 3620 in 1956.

 

1956, Sep. 11: Title transferred to Felix and Marcie D. Morse by William P., Jr. and Catherine Keaveny
