The History of the Building

 

408-410: three-story Italianate-style double. Porch removed; front three-story roughcast projecting bay added with arched entrance. 408 stuccoed. window shapes altered. 410 roughcast facade, some alterations to windows, original overhanging eaves of flat roof with brackets along side façade.”

            Louisa Vail and Marion C. Truitt were the daughters of Robert W. D. Truitt and Anna M. Bowen. He was a wealthy hardware merchant. In 1860, he reported real estate worth $250,000 and personal property worth $75,000. In 1860, he and his brother, Charles B. Truitt, were partners with Samuel L. Creutzborg in Truitt, Brother & Co. at 529 Market St. In 1870, it was Truitt, Watson & Co. For many years, Charles B. Truitt lived at 3609 Spring Garden St. Charles’s son, Robert, lived at 3505 Baring St.

            In 1880, he was living at 3622 Hamilton St. with his mother and sister.

 

1882, Mar. 31: Title transferred to Annie S. Hoopes wife of Lewis Hoopes by Rosa V. Moore (formerly Rosa V. Potts)

 

1889, Aug. 6: Death of Anna S. Hoopes, 41 years old, of 410 N. 32nd St., burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery

Josephine Walsh          18        Servant; born in Ireland

            Lewis Hoopes was the son of John Hoopes and Mary A. Lewis. The 1850 census lists him living with several siblings in the home of Abner and Hannah Hoopes, probably his grandparents, in West Goshen, Chester Co., Pa. Abner was 73 and claimed $10,000 in property. Lewis was listed as a farmer.

 

1902: Marriage of Rena E. Hoopes (410 N. 32nd St. to Charles W. Lawser

            Charles W. Lawser was born in 1872. His father died when he was an infant and his mother died when he was 7. He and his sister was raised by their moth’s brother, Henry Clermont and his wife, Elina. Henry was a carriage builder who was born in Prussia.

1912: Marriage of Edna M. Curtis to Lewis C. Hoopes

            In 1917, when he registered for the draft, they were living in Bellmawr, N. J. where he was self employed.

 

1928, Sep. 29: Death of Lewis Hoopes, 89 years old, born Dec. 16, 1838

 

1920:

Henrietta Hoopes        75        Sister, single

            They were sisters of Lewis Hoopes. The 1850 census lists Anna as 12 years old.

1923, Sep. 25: Death of Anna Margaretta Hoopes, 73 years old, of 410 N. 32nd St., daughter of John Hoopes and Mary A. Lewis.

            In 1930, Henrietta Day Hoopes was a lodger at 406 N. 32nd St. She died there in 1932.

 

1930: This house was apparently empty at the time of the 1930 census.

 

1937, June 13: Ad: “Absolute Auction, Clear of Mortgages, 3-story brick dwelling, 410 N. 32nd St…. Semi-detached, porch front, nine rooms, bath, heater, electricity…. Samuel T. Freeman & Co. auctioneers….” (Inquirer)

 

1937, July 29: Title transferred to E. Jay Greene by Lewis C. Hoopes & Edna C., his wife, Charles W. Lawser and Rena H., his wife

            Then immediately transferred to E. Jay Greene.

 

1949, Oct. 4: Title transferred to Morris Greenberg by Morris Bramnick, "Trustee"

 

1950, Feb. 9: Ad “COLORED, vacant, possession, 410 N. 32nd St., 9 rms., 2 baths, 3-rm. & bath apt., 3rd fl., good income prop. $5500.    Greenberg [tel.] PE 5-6470” (Inquirer)
