History

 

1866, Apr. 27: Title for 3620-3622 Hamilton St. transferred to Wesley Sloan by John Magrow

            Wesley Sloan was a carpenter. The 1968 directory lists him living at 4220 Eadline (Wallace) St.

 

1867, July 30: Title transferred to William J. Loflin by Wesley Sloan

            The 1868 directory lists William J. Loflin of West & Loflin, real estate, lived at 4020 Chestnut St. His partner was William Nelson West who lived at 3704 Baring St.

 

1868, June 3: Title transferred to Charles T. Brickman by William J. Loflin

 

1870:

            In the first enumeration, Mary A. Pritner was living with Levi B. and Amanda C. Albertson. SShe is listed as him mother-in-law. She was 65, born in Maryland and identified as a “Lady.”

            The 1861 Directory lists Charles C. and Charles T. Brickman, sign painters, at 1204 Stiles. Jacob Brickman, “grainer,” lived next door at 1202 Stiles. The 1866 directory lists Charles T. Brickman, painter, 14 N. 10th, h 1204 Stiles. Brickman owned several other properties in the neighborhood which he maintained as rental properties including 3610 Hamilton St.

1874 Directory (Fall 1873): Pritner Mary L., widow of John

            Mary A. Pritner purchased 3828 Hamilton St. in Oct. 24, 1874. She bought it as an investment property. The 1876 directory lists her living at 2009 Berks The 1881 directory lists her at 847 N. 15th St.

1895 Directory: Leon H. Gilbert of J. Gilbert & Son, gentlemen’s furnishing, 620 Chestnut St.

            In 1880, Leon lived with his parents, Joseph and Sylvia Gilbert, at 609 Arch St. Joseph was a shirt maker. In 1887, he lived with them at 3508 Hamilton St.

 

1898, Jul. 16: Title transferred to Leon H. Gilbert by George K. Halloway

 

1899: Want Ad: “Colored girl for general housework.” (Inquirer, Aug. 22)

1914, Sep. 12: Title transferred to Emily A. Rittenhouse, wife of William G. by Sylvia G. Woodward, wife of Arthur P.

            She purchased 3622 in 1919.

 

1917: For Rent: “3620 Hamilton St. – 8 rooms. 2 heaters. Bath: in fine condition. Rental $32.” (Inquirer, Sept. 10)

 

1919: For Sale “Immediate Possession. Exclusive neighborhood, unusual bargain, 3620 Hamilton, $6,200; lot 25x100; electricity, hardwood floors. Subway Car No. 38.” (Inquirer, Nov. 23)

 

1920, January:

Harry C. Banks            30        Organist at Girard College; owner with a mortgage

            His father and stepmother lived next door at 3622 Hamilton St. In 1900, he lived with his parents at 6327 Drexel Rd., Ward 34. His father Harry C., Sr. (age 52), who was married for a second time, was a clerk for a steel company. In 1910, Harry, Jr. and his parents were living in Lower Merion. Harry was a musician in college. In 1930, he was a church organist.

            Harry Clay Banks was organist of the Grace Episcopal Church and Professor at Girard College. He wrote music for the organ. Several pieces have been recorded. Two of his works recorded on the Girard College organ, are available from the Girard College website:

1920, Mar. 11: Title transferred to Harry C. and Virginia Banks by Emily A. Rittenhouse, wife of William G.

            His parents bought 3622 on the same day.

 

1921, May. 2: Title transferred to Helen Twaddell by Harry C. and Virginia Banks

            His parents sold 3622 a few weeks earlier. Helen Twaddell bought 3622 in 1936.

 

1924, Sept. 7: Helen Twaddell arrived on the ship America sailing from Cherbourg, France to New York.

 

1930:

            In 1910, they lived at 3919 Brown St. Nancy was the widow of Jacob H. Twaddell, a stationery salesman. She had had 3 children, 2 were surviving.

 

1938, Aug. 18: Elizabeth and Helen Twaddell, and Elizabeth Fewsmith arrived on the ship Talamanca sailing from Kingston, Jamaica.

 

1939, Aug. 22: Elizabeth and Helen Twaddell, and Elizabeth Fewsmith arrived on the ship Iriona sailing from Battios, Guatemala to Philadelphia.

 

1940:

Helen Twaddell                      51        Teacher at a public high school; single, earned $3,600 in 1939; 5 years of college; owner, house valued at $5,000

Elizabeth A., Fewsmith           54        Partner; teacher at a public high school, earned $3,600 in 1939; single; 5 years of college; born in W. Virginia, lived here in 1935

 

1946, Apr. 27: Death of Elizabeth Alexander Fewsmith, 60 years old, of 3620 Hamilton St. She was born in Camden, NJ to Crowell Fewsmith and Elizabeth Thorne.

 

1950 Directory: Helen Twaddell

            In 1966, she was honored by the Kensington High School Alumnae Association. She died in 1979. Her obituary noted the following:

“Miss Twaddell taught in the city schools for 45 years, 35 of which were spent teaching history and social science at Kensington High School. She retired in 1953…. A graduate of Girls’ High and the Philadelphia Normal School, Miss Twaddell received bachelor of science and master of arts degrees in education at the University of Pennsylvania.” (Inquirer, Dec. 28)

 

1951, Oct. 30: Title transferred to E. Bernard Zimmerman by Helen Twaddell and then immediately transferred to William P. and Catherine Keaveny, Jr.

            William P. and Catherine Keaveny, Jr. purchased 3620 the same day.

 

1956, Sep. 11: Title transferred to Felix and Marcie D. Morse by William P. and Catherine Keaveny, Jr.
