The History of the Building

 

3612-14: “two-and-one-half story Second Empire style brick double with side and front Victorian porches. Second floor projecting bays. Slate shingled mansard with two dormers.”

Previous Residents of 3614 Hamilton Street

 

1866, Apr. 27: Title for 3614-16 Hamilton St. transferred to William Bowler, et al. by John Magrow

 

1867, Jun. 25: Title transferred to Sarah J. Gorham by William Bowler, et al.

 

1868, Apr. 13: Title transferred to Charles T. F. Klotz by Sarah J. Gorham

            Charles T. F. Klotz was a bookkeeper and accountant. The 1868 directory lists him living at 310 N. 9th St. with an office at 232 N. 3rd St. The 1870 census lists him at 3605 Powelton Ave. He did not claim any real estate. He died in 1888.

 

1870 Directory: Breiter Lydia C., widow of Augustus

            The 1870 census lists her living at 3603 Powelton Ave. in the home of Leonardo D. Judd, her son-in-law.

            In 1860, they lived on the 3400 block of Hamilton St.

            The 1867 directory lists him living at 609 N. 17th St.  He had an insurance office at 409 Walnut St.  He was a partner of Joseph Tillinghast.  The partnership was dissolved in 1868 (Phila. Inquirer, Jan. 2, 1868)

            They had a son, Robert C. Allen, who died at 4 years of age on Oct. 25, 1863.

            The 1880 census and the 1889 Directory list them at 3602 Hamilton St.  In 1900, William was living at 3417 Hamilton St. with his second wife, Annie.  In 1906 and 1910, they were living at 3419 Hamilton St.  John had joined his father in the insurance company by 1889 (about age 21) and in 1889-’90 moved to 4330 Wallace St.

            “ALLEN, William Williams: Insurance agent: born in Philadelphia. He served through the Civil War with a distinguished record, and afterward engaged in the fire insurance business in Philadelphia…. Col. Allen formerly commanded the Volunteer Corps of the National Guard of Pennsylvania, and he is prominent in Grand Army circles. He is also a high Mason and Knight Templar, and one of the leaders in Masonic affairs in Philadelphia.” (Who's Who in Pennsylvania, 1908)

            In 1873, he participated in the laying of the cornerstone for the First Presbyterian Church of Mantua which was renamed the Northminster Presbyterian.

            She returned to living at  3603 Powelton Ave. She died there in 1906.

            The 1880 census lists them at 306 N. 37th St.
