The History of the Building

 

Previously the other half of 3505.  It was replaced by an apartment building in 1926 designed by J. Frank Clark and built by Franklin Construction for James Linsay Cochrane.

 

Colonial Revival four-and-one-half story brick commercial/residential building with rusticated stone quoins, -Regular-fenestration, stone sills, and brick lintels.”

            Leonardo D. Judd and Emily L. Breitner were married at the First Reform Dutch Church, Philadelphia on Nov. 2, 1865.

            The city directories of 1870 and 1872 list Lydia Breiter living at 3614 Hamilton St. She was the widow of Augustus Breiter.

            Leonardo and Emily are buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

            James S. and Francis M. Freeland lived at 3403 Hamilton St. in 1900.  James lived at 304 N. 35th St. at the time of his death in 1907.  Sara died in 1914 while living at 3811 Hamilton St.

1892, Feb. 4: “Society thronged the Northminster Presbyterian Church, at Thirty-fifth and Baring streets, on Thursday afternoon to overflowing to witness the wedding of Ms. Harriet B. Judd, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. L. B. Judd, of 3603 Powelton avenue, to Charles H. Bean. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dr. R. H. Fulton, the pastor of the church. The best man was Robert E. Glendinning, and the bridesmaids were Miss Bean, Miss Fisher, Miss Leinau, and Miss A. List. The ushers were Fred J. Kenny, of Rock Island, Ill., Robert G. McGann, H. S. Holby, Albert E. Fitler, Siddons Harper, and Alfred N. Chandler.

            “The bride wore a handsome robe of white faille silk en train, trimmed with duchesse lace and tulle veil. She carried a prayer book and wore a spray of lilies of the valley. Bridesmaids wore white crepe de chine trimmed with chalfonte lace, set off by pretty pale pink bows on the shoulders. Each wore a pink ribbon tied around the hair and fastened in a bow at the side. They carried handsome bouquets of pink roses.

            “At the close of the ceremony a reception was held at the residence of the bride's parents. [A long list a guests follows.]  The bride and bridegroom who reside in West Philadelphia, and will be ‘at home’ in March.”

            In 1889, he was president of the Market St. Bank.  He was living at 720 Preston St.

            Louisa Klotz lived next door at 3605 Powelton Ave. in 1880.

            Mrs. Bean is Harriet Judd Bean.  In 1910, they lived at 2026 Locust St.  He was a stock broker.  Emily Judd was widowed and living with them.

1907: Leonardo DaVinci Judd, M.D. Elected 1885.

1908, Mar. 18: Death of Leonardo DaVinci Judd, 66 years old.  Burial was at West Laurel Hill Cemetery.  He was born Jan. 11, 1842.

            He was the son of Samuel Hadley Dixon and Margaret Worth Pascall.  In 1880, he lived with them in Brandywine, New Castle Co., Delaware.  He listed his occupation as coach maker and his age as 26.  His father was a farmer.  Benjamin and Rose Elizabeth Quintin were married in June, 1893.  They lived in Brandywine in 1900.

            In 1880, John J. Gartland lived with his widowed mother, Mary, and six siblings at 337 N. 41st St.  He and his brother were cattle drovers.

 

1921, Nov. 5: Death of John J. Gartland, 69 years old, of 3603 Powelton Ave.   He was the husband of Margaret S. Gartland (nee Smyth).  His parents were John J. Gartland and Mary M. Feeney.  A solemn requiem mass was held at St. Agatha’s Church with burial was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

 

1922: “WATSON, Clifford A., 1401 Land Title Bld.; res., 3603 Powelton Ave., Philadelphia, Pa. Investment Banker; b. St. Lawrence Co., New York, Oct. 7, 1882; s. William and Sylvia (Washburn) Watson; maternal ancestor served in Revolutionary War; ed. Gouverneur High School, B-S. St. Lawrence Univ. 1911; m. Canton, N. Y., Aug. 28, 1913, Grace F. Stores; one son: Theodore. Taught school Boston and Philadelphia Episcopal Academy 1911-13; insurance dept. Provident Life & Trust Co. 1913-15; selling bonds N. W. Halsey & Co.. Philadelphia; A. B, Leach & Co., 1915-19; returned to Halsey Stuart & Co. 1919, and now mem. firm Holman, Watson & Rapp. Investment Bonds. Active in Bond Salesman's Drive, Liberty Bond drive. Mem. Alpha Tau Omega. Mason. Recreation: Tennis. Club: Business Science. Republican. Episcopalian.”

            In 1920, he lived at 648 N. 40th St. with his wife, Grace, and his son Theodore.  They rented the third floor.

            In 1930, he lived at 609 E. Phil Ellena St. (near Stenton Ave.).  They then had a 3 year-old daughter, Adele.
