Contracting engineer; born at Pottsvll1e, Pa., Nov. 22, 1847: began his business career under the direction of his grandfather and an uncle, who were prominent contractors In Pennsylvania, and in 1866, when only nineteen years old, he took a contract to build eleven miles of the Sunbury and Lewistown Railroad. This was followed by many important operations including the building of the track system of the Pennsylvania Railroad in connection with the Centennial Exposition. He has performed many extensive and difficult rood building operations, one of the most striking of which was the construction of the system of tracks leading into the Broad Street Station of the Pennsylvania Railroad at Philadelphia, this needing to be built so as to meet the requirements of hundreds of trains dally. These are but examples of the very numerous track-laying feats of Mr. McManus. From 1884 to 1894 he was in partnership with James B.
