Joseph
Dent’s parents, Eliza Ella Hansell and Joseph W. Dent, both died of
tuberculosis as did his maternal grandparents, William Morris Hansell
(1795-1846) and Eliza Ann Berrett (1800-1839).
In 1860, he was orphaned and living with his aunt, the former Lydia Ann
Hansell, and uncle, Samuel Lloyd. Joseph was only 10 years old, but was listed
in the census with real estate valued at $10,000. His father had been a gold
beater. Joseph married Mary Ella Butler
about 1871. He died suddenly in 1879
from tuberculosis leaving Mary with three children. In 1880, Mary Dent and the children were
living with her family in the house she grew up in, 202
N. 35th St.
