The
northern edge of this property was part of the northern boundary of the
Bingham-Baring estate.
3501-03: “Second
Empire-style double, stone facade over brick, double. First-floor projecting
bays, slate mansard and dormer; 3503 has circa 1890 two-and-one-half story
entrance addition with corbelled brick cornice, Victorian wood porch. Double
bracketed wood cornice”

1868, October: Deed transferred from Jacob Haines to William H.
McFadden.
The deed for the twin was
transferred the previous month.
The 1867 directory lists two Jacob
Haines. One lived at 521 N. 37th St. The second was a carpenter who
lived at 1015 Crease.
William McFadden lived next door at 3505 Hamilton St., which he bought from Haines the
same month. (See his biography and photo on that page.)
1869, June: Deed transferred from Jacob Haines to Charles A.
Dixon.
It is likely that McFadden defaulted
on a mortgage and ownership reverted to Haines.
Charles A. Dixon and Mary Ann
Hancock were married June 15, 1869. She was the daughter of Joseph Lee Hancock
and Susan Pryor Bacon who lived at 405 N. 33rd
St.

In 1860, Walter lived near Market
and 31st. His father was a blacksmith. In 1870, his mother was widowed and the address was given as 340 N 31st.
He married Katharine (Kate) Berghauser about 1876. In
1870, she lived with her widowed mother and sister at 3301
Hamilton St.

daughters. They divorced in the 1920s. In 1930, Donald was living in a hotel in
Stonington, New London, Conn. where he was Vice President of a cotton mill. He
remarried in the 1930s. In 1929, Julia married Frank G. Tallman, a widowed vice
president of DuPont who had retired four years earlier.

1910, Dec. 27: Marriage of
Jessie M. Hays to Benjamin John Campbell at Zion Protestant Episcopal
Church. He was the son of John P. E. and Elizabeth Mildred Campbell and was
from Mayo River, Patrick Co., Va. where he was a piano and organ salesman in
1910. He was 40 years old. His father had been a cabinet maker.

1917 WWI Draft Registration: Walter Francis Hays was born in Ocean City,
N.J. on Aug. 13, 1894. He was a “student officer” at Ft. Niagara, N.Y., but
listed his employer as Masland Dura Leather Co. in Philadelphia. He was a
member of the 4th Provisional Training Regiment.
1917: Marriage of Mildred Fritch to Walter F.
Hays
They
were both 23. In 1920 and 1930, they lived in Haverford where he was a salesman
for an iron and steel company. They had two children: Walter F., Jr. and Robert F. Hays. The 1940 census found them living in
Wynnwood, Lower Merion, but states that in 1935 they lived in Brookline,
Delaware Co. In 1939, he had earned more than $5,000 – quite a substantial sum.
Mildred and Walter had both attended college for 2 years. In 1942, when Walter
registered for the WWII draft, he was working for R. B. Fritch & Co.
