3631 Hamilton Street

 

The History of the Building

 

3621-3631: “three-story red brick Victorian row house; two registers with segmental stone lintels, decorative carved wood cornices and brackets. All but 3621 and 3623 have first-floor projecting bays and all but 3625 (Victorian porch) have circa 1905 Colonial Revival porches.”

            3621-3623 Hamilton were included in a similar transaction in February of that year.

 

1870, March: Deeds for 3621-3631 Hamilton transferred from John M. Mole to John K. McCurdy.

 

1871, March: Deed transferred from Thomas Foster Lipshiff? to Charles Gilpin., Jr.

            He was the son of former Philadelphia Mayor Charles Gilpin. He married Ida Robinson Davis, in 1871 in Allegheny Co., Pa. In 1891, they lived at 212 N. 33rd St. Charlotte Gilpin married Rodney D. Allen. In 1910, they lived at 3321 Hamilton St.

1893, April 16, Inquirer: “West Philadelphia's contribution to the fashionable weddings of the week was the nuptials miss Edith Shapleigh, daughter of the late Dr. E. R. Shapleigh, and Francis Sellers Garrett in St. Andrews P. E. Church, at noon Wednesday. The officiating clergymen were Rev. John R. Moses, of St. James Church, and Rev. C. M. Armstrong, of St. Andrews. The bride wore an Empire gown of white bengaline, trimmed with duchess lace, and carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley. The maid of honor was miss Anna Blandy, and she wore Japanese crepe, a satin cloak trimmed swansdown and a white chip hat.

            "J. George Klemm, Jr., was the best man. The ushers were: John S. Loyd, William H. Loyd, Jr., W. Hasell Wilson, Jr., T. Wilson Loyd, George Bissell, Arthur Spruance, Alexander Sellers, and Harry Miller.

            "After the marriage a breakfast, attended only by the immediate families, was given at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Wilson, aunt and uncle of the bride, 302 North 36th street.”

1895, Nov. 17: For rent furnished - 3631 Hamilton St., 11 rooms, $35 per month. (Inquirer)

 

1900: apparently missed by the census

 

1901, August: Deed transferred from Eli L. & Martha P. (wife) Garrett to John S. & Anna R. (wife) Lentz.

 

1906: Permit issued to Joe Price for a wood and brick porch, 17x10 feet, 3631 Hamilton St. for Mrs. Anna R. Lentz. Cost: $325. (Inquirer, June 7)

            In 1900, they lived at 3813 Powelton Ave. in the home of [William] Lewis Brechemin, Rosaline and Charles’ father. He was a retired bookkeeper who was born in Pa. in 1821 and died in 1902. His father was born in France and his mother in Scotland (from 1880 census). In 1900, Rosaline had been married to Bowness Briggs for 16 years. He was born in England in 1854 and was a freight and passenger agent. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1893. He died in Dec. 1905. Rosaline was a schoolteacher before she got married. The 1880 census lists Rosaline as age 23 and Charles as 21 with middle initial P. The Brechemin family was living at 729 S. 9th St.

            In the 1906 Blue Book, Charles and Rosaline were listed at 3317 Baring St.

            In 1912, a friend, Cecil Ball, died without any surviving relatives. She had lived with her parents at 3410 Powelton Ave. They had lived in Powelton since at least the 1870s. Rosaline Brigg covered her funeral expenses.

1949, Feb. 16: Death of Charles Brechemin, 90 years old

            “Charles Brechemin, retired vice president of the McKeesport Tin Plate Corp., died Wednesday at his home, 3631 Hamilton st. He was 90.

            “Mr. Brechemin, a native of Philadelphia, retired from the firm, which has offices in New York, in March, 1940. Active in Masonic circles, he was a member of University Lodge, Mary Commandery, Knights Templar, University Royal Arch Chapter, Benjamin Franklin Consistory, and LuLu Temple.

            “Mr. Brechemin also was a member f the Union League, the Penn Athletic Club and the Lambs Club of New York….” (Inquirer, Feb. 18)

 

1949, Nov. 15: Death of Rosaline B. Briggs, 92 years old, of 3631 Hamilton St.
