            Sally was the widow of Owen Evans who sold china.  In 1857, he had a store at 503 Market St. and they lived at “Kinsessing above Buist Lane” (probably the 6900 block of Kingsessing).  Owen died about 1857-’59.  In 1860, Sally and their children lived in Mantua (Ward 24, Precinct 6).  She listed her real estate holdings at $17,000 and her personal property at $300.  In 1870, they lived at 3503 Baring St. and Sally was a teacher.  The 1875 directory lists her at 315 N. 35th St.

1920, Jan. 31: Obituary - “Palmer – On Jan. 29, Esther A. daughter of William H. and Alice L. Palmer.  The relatives and friends invited to service ... at parents’ residence, 3712 Baring st.”

            It was then transferred to Emily G. Whitten Auge.

 

1921 AMA American Medical Directory: Emily G. Whitten Auge, MD, office at 1831 Chestnut St.

            Dr. Emily G. Whitten was the daughter of Alexander and Priscilla Whitten.  The 1870 census lists Alexander Whitten as a 30 year-old salesman who was born in Ireland.  At the time of his death in 1888, he was identified as the senior member of the firm of Alexander Whitten & Co., liquor dealers at 108 Walnut St. and living at 2221 Spring Garden St.  Emily married Dr. S. Truman Auge, son of Samuel and Jane Auge, in Philadelphia Oct. 23, 1901.  He died Jan. 31, 1915 when they were living at 2802 N. Broad St.  The 1920 census lists her living with her two daughters and her sister, Eleanor Eastburn in an apartment at 223 N. 40th St.  (for more, see her obituary, below)

 

1925, Aug. 30: Death of Truman Auge, 53 years old, of 3712 Baring St.. He was a physician on the staff of Samaritan Hospital.  He graduated from Boys' Central high School in Philadelphia and from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.  The cause of death was heart disease.

            Dr. Truman Auge and Dr. Emily G. Whitten were married in 1902.

1931: Marriage of Emily W. Auge to Franklin Herbert Pennell

 

1934, Dec. 12: Death of Dr. Emily G. Auge

            “Dr . Emily G. Whitten Auge, senior chief of surgery at the Woman's Hospital of Philadelphia, died of a heart attack at her home last night at the age of 57. She had performed several operations during the day.

“A graduate of the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1894, she was the widow of Dr. S. Truman Auge. She had been chief of surgery at the West Philadelphia Hospital for Women before its merger into the Woman's Hospital of Philadelphia, with which she continued her association. She also was chief urologist at the Clinic of Notre Dame.

“Dr. Auge was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Medical Association and several other medical organizations.

“Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. [sic.] Eleanor Fairley Auge and Mrs. Franklin Herbert Pennell.”  (NYT, Dec. 13)

 

1939, Apr. 16: Death of Elizabeth Whitten, 63 years old, of 3712 Baring St. daughter of Alexander Whitten and Priscilla Fairley

            Her death certificate says her parents were born in Ireland, not Scotland
