History of the Building

 

1902, July 22: Robert Hamilton purchased 3225-3233 Spring Garden St.

 

1902: “J. A. Bohem will build four houses and a store and dwelling at the northeast corner of Thirty-third and Spring Garden streets, for Robert Hamilton, to cost $29,000….” (Inquirer, July 29)

            Jacob A. Bohem and his brother, Anthony O. Bohem, were makers of metal cornices at 3059 N. 15th St. In 1900, he was 30 years old, living with his wife and 3 young children at 7732 N. 25th St. His father was born in France and his mother in Ohio. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in Ireland. The 1906 directory lists his business as “elevators.” The 1910 census lists him as an architect.

 

3221-33: “pairs of Pompeiian brick, North Italian Revival houses; second-story pressed metal bay with shield; first-floor wood columned porches; dentilled, pressed metal cornice; 3233 has first-floor shopfront with cast iron columns, and side bays on 33rd Street facade.--- Contributing”

1913, July 1: Titles for 3225-3231 all transferred to Louis Jones by Robert Hamilton

            Note: 3233 had been sold separately in 1908.

 

1913, July 2: Title transferred for 3225-3233 all to Bessie I. Jelin, wife of Abraham by Louis Jones

 

1915, Oct. 26: Title transferred for 3225-3233 all to Amy E. Drickworth and Lilly G. Brown by Bessie I. Jelin, wife of Abraham

 

1919, July 2: After several other transfers of 3225-3233, 3229 was transferred to William K. Lynch.
