The History of the Building

 

3616-18: “three-story Italianate double, stuccoed. Shallow-gabled roof over 3616; 3618 has a flat roof. Double bracketed cornice; first-floor projecting bays…. 3618 has circa 1920 enclosed tan brick colonial porch.”

            Thomas Crispinn was a home builder who likely built this home.

1873 Directory: Lane Emma M., widow of Peter

            The 1872 directory listed her living at 38 S. 19th St.

 

1873, Nov. 19: Death of Mrs. Emma M. Lane of 3618 Hamilton St.

 

1876, Mar. 19: Death of Alfred K. Smith, at Charleston, S.C. of valvular heart disease. He was a member Philadelphia Lodge No. 444, A. Y. M. Burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

            He married to Albina Griffith about 1872. They previously lived at 3207 Baring St. with her family. In 1880, she lived at 3700 Hamilton St.

1896: “Mr. and Mrs. George S. Holloway gave their first at home at 3518 Hamilton street last week. The bridesmaids at the wedding assisted in the receiving of guests.” (Inquirer, Nov. 15)

1910 Directory: Emma Southgate, widow of John

She was already widowed when the 1889 directory listed her living at 707 S. 10th St. The 1880 census lists them living on Arch St. He was listed as a real estate broker. John was 39 and Emaline was 33. Evaline, their only child listed, was 9 years-old.

Samuel Zacharias         70        Boarder; superintendent of a trust com.; widowed

 

1915, Jan. 24: Death of Samuel M. Zacharias of 3618 Hamilton St., 74 years old, son of Samuel Zacharias and Maria C. Milleisen. He was widowed. In 1850, the family live in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland Co., Pa.

“Samuel M. Zacharias, 74 years old, who died Sunday night at his home, 3618 Hamilton street, was for 30 years superintendent of vaults of the Guarantee Trust and Safe Deposit Company. Mr. Zacharias was born in Lingletown, Dauphin County, and was graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1863. That year he joined the Union Army, serving in the Sixth Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. Following this he entered the grain business with his father, and later was appointed Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue for Juanita, Mifflin and Snyder Counties.” (Evening Public Ledger, Jan. 26, 1915)

            [The census lists them at 3616 as Elizabeth and Mary J. but this is unlikely. This raises questions about the other information listed here.]

            Emma Southgate born August 28, 1848.

 

1931, May 6: Death of Emma Southgate, 83 years old, of 3618 Hamilton St. She was buried in Bala Cynwyd.

            She left an estate of $20,000 to her daughter. (Inquirer, May 17)

 

1940, Mar. 11: Death of Eva G. Southgate, 64 years old, of 3618 Hamilton St.

Emma and Eva are buried with Samuel M. Zacharias.
