3606 Powelton Avenue

 

This double was built by James C. Shedwick. who lived at 3624 Baring St. in 1870. He and his father, John Shedwick, built a home for themselves at 3408 Race St. and moved there about 1872. They built many houses in Powelton.

 

3604-06: “two-and-one-half story, Queen Anne-style double composed of red brick; decorated with pressed brick belt courses and corbelled brick below gable windows. Gables are faced with red and gray slate shingles, the mansarded roof also gray slate shingles. Windows and doorways have splayed arched lintels and surrounds; the original wood porch is intact”

1887 Directory: Farson Enoch S., president, 220 Dock St.

                         Farrson Enoch S. Jr.  

            In 1880, they lived at 3302 Baring St. He was president of E.S. Farson & Co. which manufactured refrigerators.

 

1887, Aug. 25: Death of Enoch S. Farron, 73 years old, of 3606 Powelton Ave. He was born in Philadelphia.

1898, Sept.: Advertised for rent, 3606 Powelton Ave., 14 rooms for $75 per month.

 

1900, Sept. 5: “George C. Howard, contractor, put in invalid elevator, 3606 Powelton avenue.” (Inquirer)

            During the Civil Ward, James C. Shedwick served in Company A, Ninth Regiment of Militia. “At South Mountain, close to Gettysburg, a Union cavalry regiment charging the enemy bore so close to the line of the Forty-fifth Regiment that James C. Shedwick was knocked down by the advancing body, receiving injuries from which he has never wholly recovered.” (Henry Graham Ashmead, Descendants of Joseph and Mary Dodge Campbell in America, 1907, pp 55-57)

            In 1887, he lived with his parents at 3408 Race St. In June 1900, the census showed him and his family living at 420 Preston St.

 

1906 Blue Book: James C. Shedwick was a member of the Powelton Club, 207 N. 35th St.

 

1910:

James C. Shedwick      70        Builder; widowed; born in England, immigrated in 1843, now a citizen; owner free of a mortgage

George W. Shedwick   56        Brother; clergyman

Elizabeth Shedwick     54        Sister-in-law; married 25 years, no children

Margaret Colleary        36        Servant; born in Ireland, immigrated in 1891

            In 1895, George was living at 3408 Race St. with his parents. He and his brother William J. Shedwick were working together as carpenters. Their business was at 3410 Mt. Vernon.

            John Shedwick and his sons were home builders who built many homes in the area. The “Shedwick Development Houses” at 3433-3439 Lancaster Ave. are on the National Register of Historic Places.

            In 1900, Seigfried was living with his first wife, Clara Oppenheimer, and their daughter, Helen at 921 N. 19th St. Siegfried and Clara were married in Philadelphia in 1889. They had been married for 10 years. He gave his place of birth (and his mother’s) as Germany.
